Logic 9 altering tempo in audio file

I was wondering if it was possible to alter the tempo of an AUDIO file in logic without affecting its pitch. I tried converting it to a sampler track and it helped to an extent where I could increase the tempo without any alteration in the sound, however if I tried decreasing the tempo, the sound quality was affected and it would begin to make these skipping noises.

Would appreciate any ideas / input,

Look up flex time in the manual. That should do the trick. Keep in mind though that, no matter the algorithm or plug-in used, there is only going to be so far you can slow down audio and maintain it's full integrity.
