Logic 9 drop-out on playback

Playing back recent mixes with client present, I was plagued with sudden drops in level which were neither replicated when playing that section again, nor in the waveforms or fader movements, nor in the bounces.

IOW, there's something in my overall setup which places a sudden draining call on my audio output.

Looking at CPU usage, although it was hard to predict when this would occur again, I saw low level cpu activity anyway throughout. (8-core)

Any suggestions as to the cause?

Bad cable? Bad D/A converter? Bad tube or transistor?

if any of those, then I would experience the same dropouts listening to itunes, or YouTube etc, which I don't. eg yesterday I listened to all of Mahler's 5th on my system without a dropout.

argh, spoke too soon. Had several dropouts listening to regions in Waveburner. These dropouts were not part of the audiostream.

could this be caused by ical silent alarms?
