Can anyone think of a wheeze whereby whenever I go into Record, the room monitors are muted? ( everyone's wearing cans)

Logic provides a Control Surface called "Recording Light". It sends MIDI when recording starts and stops. Two possibilities:

Send the event to the IAC Bus, get it in again at the Physical Input in the Environment, transform it to the proper event and mute the channelstrip where your boxes are connected.

Or, instead of muting the Logic channel, send the event out again and mute the channels in your Fireface (Totalmix).
