Logic Pro 9 exs24 problems and questions

Logician
hello i am new to this forum, so forgive me if anybody's already asked the same question.
however, lately i've been trying to load samples into the instrument editor of the exs24, but after they've been loaded, the sound is suddenly a lot noisier than it was before... can anybody help me?
i've also been wondering. in exs24 it's possible to change the sample storage quality from "original" to 32-bit float... is it really possible to "upgrade" a sample?
another problem i have is that when i open a sample from the exs24 instrument editor in the sample editor, for some reason logic won't let me audition the sample by clicking the speaker icon...

on a totally different topic... is there a way to view all automation in logic simultaneously?

i hope somebody's able to help me!! thanks a lot!

Are there any plug ins inserted on the channel strip it is playign through?

Not sure exactly what you mean by "upgrading" a sample.

Hmmm, I'm not sure why that's happening.

Yes, go into automation view. Automation will be shown on every track. And then option click on the downward pointing triangles in the automation area of the track header for tracks that have multiple lanes of automation in order to display all the lanes for each track simultaneously.

nope, none at all...

i just mean, for instance, to change the bit depth from 16 to 32-bit float... or changing the sample rate... to a higher value...

Hmmm, I'm not sure why that's happening.

ok, well, that isn't my biggest problem - although it is annoying...

perfect, much better! thanks!

What about anywhere else in the signal path?

I think you're getting confused about what this preference does. It's strictly got to do with how Logic uses memory and stores the samples in ram, not the actual sample rate of the samples themselves.

i don't understand... what exactly do you mean?

yeah, that might be the problem, hehe... nevermind, now i am one step closer to understanding.

Are there any plug ins on the main output, or any buss/aux objects the signal might be passing through on the way to the main outputs?

no... nothing at all!

actually... if you wouldn't mind, i'd really appreciate if i could upload the song and you would have a look to see what's wrong? maybe there's just something i've completely misunderstood...

Okay, I can take a look.

Do you have any unusual filter or matrix settings in your EXS 24 Instrument controls? That could also explain the sound not translating properly when compared to the raw sample.

If you do upload your project, don't forget to include the sample(s).

ok, i've uploaded the project, with sampler instrument and samples. it's here: http://www.divshare.com/download/11424810-ae8

thanks a lot for doing this!!
obviously, the samples are of static noise, but as you can hear... they're just a little noisier i had intended!

That is the most bizarre thing I have ever seen! Sure enough, you're right; the samples sound very different in the EXS 24 than when auditioned alone. It sounds as if they are being overdriven by a filter of some sort. But they're not. All the EXS settings are neutral. And the project is free of any processing. It is very bizarre.

I copied the samples into a fresh template of my own and imported the samples into a fresh EXS 24 instrument. And sure enough, they sounded fine - exactly as expected. Except for some volume discrepancies; which are easily explained by triggering at different velocities, etc.

There doesn't appear to be anything in your project that would be causing this. I can't explain it.

If any one else wants to jump in and take a look at this - I'd be curious to see if anyone can get to the bottom of this mystery (Manfred, Sascha, are you out there reading this??)

yeah, it's just really strange and annoying!
thanks a lot for looking!
i really appreciate it if somebody else would take a look as well, since now i know i am not the one who's crazy and doing it all wrong hehe...
i'd really like to get to the bottom of this, because otherwise... in the end i might have to install logic again? do you think that would fix this?

ok, hey eli, if you're still there then i need your help once more. or at least i have a question for you. i've been trying to solve my problem for a LONG time now and the final thing i tried was converting the samples from wav to aif in itunes and for some reason, everything is fine now!! now, i really don't think the format was the problem, i think it's more likely that audacity (that i had used to chop the samples up with) had created the problem OR that the original files for some reason did... however since you tried loading them into the exs24 on your computer that might not be the problem anyway...
having told you this, do you have any clue what it might have been? it would just be really nice for me to get the problem cleared once and for all and know what i did wrong before...

right... another reason i want to know is because the original bit depth was 32 bit float and now it's 16 bit because it's the highest bit depth that itunes can convert to...

another thought i had was if it had something to do with the real time sample converter of audacity or the high quality sample converter of it... but that probably wouldn't change anything about this either.
no matter what then thanks for all your help! i really appreciate it!
by the way, would you happen to know of another free editor other than audacity?

Some of the samples are 32-bit, which the EXS24 does not support. Logic only works with specific bit depths. My recommendation would be to convert it from 32 to 24 bit before trying to use it in the EXS24.

Also, back when you asked about 32-bit support in the EXS, this is a bit different. In this case, the EXS isn't using 32bit files, its using more memory (32bit is bigger than 24bit) and expanding the 24 bit in 32 bit memory space. This does not increase the resolution of the audio, but rather makes processing more CPU efficient since it isn't real-time converting it up to 32bit.

From the docs:
• Sample Storage pop-up menu: Determines the sample format handling method used by the EXS24 mkII.
• Original: Loads samples into RAM at their original bit depth. These are converted to the internal 32-bit floating point format of the host application on playback.
• 32 Bit Float: Samples are stored and loaded in this format. This eliminates the need for any real time conversions, meaning that the EXS24 mkII handles samples more efficiently and can play back more voices simultaneously.

Hope this helps.. sounds like you are very close to making this work since the OS appears to be able to play the files. I wouldn't be surprised if Quicktime Pro could convert these files to 24 bit.

I didn't check the bit depth of the files. And yeah, like Brian says, if they are 32 bit, that is likely the source of the problem. I'm surprised logic is even playing those at all.

In any case, like Brian suggests, try and find a way to convert them to 24 bit and see if the behavior becomes more consistent.
