Logic Pro 9 iPhone/iPad App for Logic, Please

Now that Digital Performer has added an iPhone/Pad app to control various features, I really wish Apple would follow suit for Logic!

For example, I have absolutely no need for an iPad, but heck, I'd buy one just to control Logic's mixer, if the app came with Long-Throw fader simulations.

Apple should be a leader in this regard instead of waiting for others to do it, IMHO.

I totally agree. I want to be able to grab my Iphone or Ipad, go into my vocalbooth and:

•Start/stop/Rec Logic.
•Choose new tracks and arm them
•Control the mixer
•Control the gain of my Apogee Ensemble or Duet and see the meter.

It's impossible for me to understand why Logic wasn't the first DAW that could do this.

I have Air Mouse for iPhone which is a remote control app.
I just tested it with Logic and you actually can get limited control of some functions by using the QWERTY keyboard - it sends key commands to Logic! You need to have your phone and your Mac on the same wi-fi network and it works perfectly.

I could successfully play/stop/record with ease. Also tried muting/unmuting regions. You can send any key command.
It's not what you want, but it's better than nothing....

This would be trivial if Logic implemented OSC (Open Sound Control). I currently have several apps that interact with my Kyma system, including midi over osc. Logic is lagging here, perhaps not in terms of the DAW world, but in the larger world of sound software...

Excellent ideas...It is rather comical that DP beat Apple to the punch on this functionality, which seems like such an obvious feature (at least in retrospect)...

Pff - it's not only DP. Steinberg has an iPhone control for Cubase since May 2009 already. And guess what? Doesn't even cost a dime.

You can even control the Arranger function with that one, which is pretty cool.

And no, this is not rather comical. It's almost cynical.

Apart from that, why doesn't Apple come up with something such as "iGarageband"?
There's a handful of rather powerful music applications for the iPhone already (such as BeatMaker), but there's a complete lack of any more or less decent sequencer. Sure, iPhones don't come with all that much power, but given a properly implemented freeze function, one could surely do quite a lot.
I wish so much I could record guitar tracks immediately, with nothing but an iPhone and, say, an iRig "interface". The sound wouldn't have to be great as I could always re-amp said guitars at home or elsewhere.

But well, I don't think we'll see anything like this or that from Apple any day soon.

I have a question here.
My Iphone is controlled/synced with my laptop. My main Logic rig is my MacPro. Can you hook your AC-7 to a Machine that isn't your "Iphone machine"?

I think so.
I don't use AC-7 with my iPhone. I use the Pro version with my iPad. But I think you won't have a problem.

The machine does not need to be your "device machine". You just need to have them sharing the same Wi-Fi network and use the DSMI server app.

I've been trying the AC7 pro over here. I guess it's "OK" but it's not blowing me away. I have no idea how to really customize it so I can fly around when I'm tracking, and, the scrub wheel seems wonky as I can't accurately fly around the sequence like I can with my mackie d8b in hui mode. It skips all over the place. Finally, it takes a while for logic and the ac7 pro to communicate. I love the DP 7 app. It has a ton of great features and allows for a lot of tweaking. Also connects very easily. I agree that it's crazy that Apple hasn't come out with their own Logic app (?). Let's hope they or someone else comes up with something a little more specialized for us!

Bill, always be cautious about suggesting what may or may not be "trivial" unless of course you are the programmer doing the programming. :) I have absolutely no idea what is in the works regarding OSC and Logic, but for all I know, it's incredibly complicated to add to Logic, or if Logic did implement OSC, it might only do so in a way that is complicated to use.

You know, it's sort of funny:

Sometimes people berate Apple for not concentrating enough on "pro" software...then other times, they berate Apple for the fact that their pro audio division isn't diverting itself to do a decidedly "hobbyist" thing.

I mean, seriously, an iOS remote? I have one for my iPad (AC-7 Pro) and it's fine and it's fun, but how many professional studios are going to use an iPad instead of a dedicated controller like a Frontier Tranzport or a Mackie Control or Euphonix controller? Do you think that the Cubase or Digital Performer remote controls are helping Steinberg or MOTU with professional sales? Do any of you know any pro studios in your area that have sold their mixing or remote control hardware and now rely on the Steinberg or MOTU apps? Maybe you do, but I don't.

So this is a fun toy for the home user, but nothing more. Don't get me wrong, I love fun toys, my iPhones and iPads are full of fun toys! :thmbup: But I'd rather think that the pro audio engineers are trying to fix all those bugs that still exist in Logic, maybe thinking of adding pro features for a new version in the future, etc. and not f**king around with an iPhone app. And I say this as someone with 117 apps! I love apps! :hippy:

Anyway, I have no idea when we'll hear of something new for Logic Pro, but for my part, I hope whenever we do, it's a serious bugfix release, and not a way to view my transport on my iPhone or iPad. I have other apps for that. I don't have an app that makes up for bugs, awkward implementation of features, or missing features in Logic Pro.

There are ways to customize it, depending how you set up the buttons. Check out the developer's site, and some additional youtube videos (I believe the Sonicstate.com review gave me some good ideas). As for communication, I set up an ad-hock airport network just between my Mac Pro and my iPad and it works quite well, very fast. You could even use it for automation, if you wanted to.

Let's hope they or someone else comes up with something a little more specialized for us!

What about Air Display? That turns your iPad into a Mac monitor. What can possibly look more like Logic...than actually having a Mac monitor displaying a Logic window on your iPad? It's not as fast as AC-7Pro, but for use as a Transport, for adjusting plug-ins, for "static" mixing (meaning, not playing back or using automation) it's your actual mixer itself, not a remote, not an approximation, it's the actual software mixer itself. That's as direct a connection as you're going to get, other than a version of Logic that actually runs in your iPad. :)

Slowly, I think the iApps are coming to iOS:

  • iWork (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) are available for iPad. Rumors are they are nearly ready for iPhone.
  • iMovie is now on iPhone. I'm sure with iOS 4.1 for iPad, it will come to iPad as well.

I would not be surprised if when the iPad is on 4.1 and the iOS devices are "unified" in their OSs, we start seeing the more complex iApps like GarageBand and iWeb coming to iOS, too. (So people can blog to iWeb on their iOS device, like they already can to blogger and wordpress).

But I don't think this will happen soon.

Well, Logic is not primarily aiming at the professional studio market - at least not at that kind of studios using larger hardware controllers.
And yes, I actually *do* believe that something such as a remote control for a smartphone is a very, very nice thing, even in the professional area.
Example: A good friend (a drummer) is running his little studio. Quite sometimes he's recording drums on his own, no techs there and what not. So, what is he supposed to do? He does have a second monitor that he can turn around (behind the control room screen), he also does have a wireless keyboard. But that's not even remotely as comfortable as an iPhone remote would be.
I could think of a *lot* of (professional) scenarios when something like that would come in very handy.

Anyway, I have no idea when we'll hear of something new for Logic Pro, but for my part, I hope whenever we do, it's a serious bugfix release, and not a way to view my transport on my iPhone or iPad. I have other apps for that. I don't have an app that makes up for bugs, awkward implementation of features, or missing features in Logic Pro.

This, obviously, is what I hope as well. Right now, L9 goes the same way as L8. And I already had high hopes when it started with quite some proper updates. Gone with the wind again, the next bugfix will be something we'll have to pay for. Introducing new bugs. Maybe I'll be back on some Windows sequencer by that time. Apple is not building a single even remotely decent priced computer (or with proper specs) anyway and my Macbook is in need of a replacement.

Sorry for the rant (well, no, not exactly...).

I totally agree with Orren.

And I use my iPad in the same scenario described by you.
I'm a drummer and use Desktop Connect to control Logic while seated on my drum stool.
I think it's better to use an app like that so I can actually see the Logic interface (and my desktop) instead of just faders and the transport which is what AC-7 Pro and similar apps do.

Ac7.....not great for me.....

The main problem which actually makes me NOT able to use AC7 is that there is no locate function. I emailed them about this and they very nicely explained that there was no solution except using the scrub wheel. That is not a solution and when I try to do that, it's impossible to land where you need to.
If anyone has a solution for this, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise, I don't have the ridiculous amount of time it needs to try and line up the spot I want to then hit play........unusable app for this main reason.

Probably desktop connect or something similar would far and away outperform AC7!
