Logic Pro 9 plugin for string quartet?

peterlemer

Logician
I'm writing a string quartet and would like suggestions for a sample set that would give me a slightly better approximation of the solo instruments than the basics of EXS and K4 - just to help me visualise what I'm doing :)

MSI/GPO

I would suggest either one of these:

MOTU - Symphonic Instrument - Universal Orchestral Instrument

http://imsproav.com/main/MOTU839128005372.html

Or:

Garritan - Personal Orchestra 4th Edition

Oh and if it's just strings you also have Native Instruments Session Strings and Session Strings Pro:

Since you're already using NI - GPO and the Session Strings will be a familiar interface for you in Logic : )

Garritan is pretty cool, have way more to offer as far as being able to create a full orchestra piece, is very reasonably prices, and their copy protection is one of the best, meaning the least hassle to actually use.

Eddie, am I right in saying that the NI strings don't include solo instruments?

George & Eddie - I'm new to 64-bit Logic - don;t know why I waited so long!

What are the downsides to working with 32-bit plugins such as Garritan and MOTU and having that 32-bit bridge thingy?

FAQ #9 points to an Apple KB which covers a lot of the pros and cons of using logic in 64 bit mode. If you have some favourite plugins that are still not 64 bit, contact the developers and ask them to get the finger out, Logic 9.1 has been out for over 18 months ....

kind regards

The Aria player that GPO 4 uses has been 64-bit for a while and is very stable. I'd add a recommendation for GPO 4 - it's capable of great expressiveness, after a little practice and study of the (excellent) manual, and is comparatively light on resources.

I love most things about the Kirk Hunter library (I've got Emerald EXS24), but have never liked the sound of the solo strings quite as much as the other instruments. You do get a good set of articulations though.

I have been away on holiday but I have been looking for realistic string quartet sounds as well about a year ago.
I found that "Xsample Chamber Ensemble" were very good. Great layering and also very cleverly programmed. They run on the Kontakt 4 machine so no problems with 64 bit there. They are not cheap but not extremely expensive either.
I also have EastWest Symphonic Orch which are also quite good but just not as good as the other ones but certainly a lot more bang for the buck if you use one of Soundsonline frequent discounts. They are very close to releasing a 64 bit version, it's a public beta at the moment.

CSeye - I admit to finding Kontakt sample management a bit obscure.
When I search for solo violin, all I can find is 'Violin Solo.nki' in VSL Strings.
It sounds good, but I can't control the vib.
I also found 'Legacy' solo violin which seemed much the same.
The Kirkhunter demos are awesome, thanks for that link even if i don;t buy - but they're favourite atm :)
the demo called 'Gut' here, is in the direction I'm going:-

and further down: Hallucinations. not bad :)

according to my searches it will only work 64-bit native on a windows machine. I can't find any info to the contrary

Pete,

I can assure you that the Aria AU is working in 64-bit mode here - see the attached screenshot, bottom left of the Aria window :)

No-one seems to have mentioned the "gorilla in the room" - VSL.

The Vienna Symphonic Library is probably the most comprehensive and detailed orchestral library going. They have a solo strings bundle:
http://www.vsl.co.at/en/211/442/344/1825/1489.htm

They're not cheap, and they take a little more work, but the VSL range are exceptional in sound quality, consistency and expression.

For best results, it's also advisable to use Vienna Instruments Pro.

I'm convinced! :). thanks Chris. I see you have set up a piano sextet - is this something you're working on, something you've completed, or something you've set up as part of this chat?

Hi Pete,

The sextet is something I've just started on, so I'm not sure how far it will get!

As regards GPO, it's not designed to compete with the big libraries, but I find it a great composing tool, especially as I'm restricted to 4 Gb of RAM until I can afford to upgrade.

I see Synful do a 15 day free trial, which seems very generous. I must admit to liking Pianteq, which also uses physical modelling, not least because it is so fast to load.
