Logic Pro 9 Piano Roll MIDI note volume

Hi all,

I have a number of tracks in a project which have midi notes of different volumes that I need to make ALL the same volume. How do I do this quickly, other than changing each note individually?

Thanks

In the piano roll editor select all the notes. Click on transform in the functions drop down then select velocity limiter. Set the maximum and the minimum to the same value.

There are other ways to do this.

With all notes selected in any editor (though if on many tracks, you need to make sure you have select all notes you need to change across all track) hold down SHIFT and OPTION then adjust the velocity of any note (in the inspector) . They all change to that new value.

OR (and this may be easier with lots of tracks):

  1. In the arrange, select all regions.
  2. In the inspector add a velocity of 96, then add it again. This will make all MIDI note velocities play at their maximum of 127.
  3. Press 'N' on the keyboard, this fixes the velocity value of 127 for each MIDI event.
  4. If you want them less than 127 reduce the velocity in the inspector and press 'N' again

Alternative method:

  1. Selet all regions
  2. In the inspector set dynamics to fixed (this makes all notes play at velocity of 64
  3. Adjust velocity in inspector up or down
  4. Press N to fix the values (or whatever keycommand for Normalise Sequence parameters

Note that this only affects velocity of MIDI notes, which can be volume, but not necessarily. Nor will it make all notes sound at the same level.

To get every note actually sounding at the same volume, you will probably need different velocities for different samples/sounds as well as possibly using volume CC data and/or track automation.

@ Pete -

I just learned a tip here - I never thought to deal with velocities in multiple regions using the inspector (I actually rarely if ever have to bring all velocities to the same setting).

Two clarifications - My key command is control N, not N, so my guess is this is the current default for Logic. (For those who prefer the menu item, it's found in MIDI>Region Parameters) And I think you meant to use "fixed" instead of "100 percent"

Lastly, why does the velocity adjustment only go to 96 (instead of 127) when we have knobs that can do eleven? But seriously, I didn't remember that was a limitation - probably more than enough range adjustment, just curious.

Yes, you're probably right about the key command, and yes, it should be fixed not 100%, I'll edit that in the post, thanks.

I don't know. And again, I should have said add 96 twice!
