Logic Pro 9 Bouncing tracks that use the Quicktime Synth

Hi

I could have sworn that with previous versions of Logic that bouncing tracks that used the Quicktime Synth for playback of MIDI tracks used to render the QT MIDI to audio within the bounce file. [Currently using the latest version of Logic Pro.]

That doesn't seem to be the case anymore, unless I'm missing something.
If I am missing something then what is it?

I've got tons of old writing Projects that used the QT Synth for audio playback of MIDI tracks and now, if I want to mix them down to audio, I'm forced to use Software Instruments on the QT Synth tracks instead - and it's a bit of a PITA.

Any way around this?

Try creating software instrument tracks and use the Apple DLSMusicDevice plugin. Drag the midi files from the midi instrument tracks to the software instrument tracks that have the DLSMusicDevice loaded on it. This will give you those Quicktime Synth sounds you're looking for. Are you using Logic in 64 bit mode? I notice that when I use it in 64 bit mode, I can't use the QT Synth anymore. So I just keep two versions of Logic in the App Folder (Logic in 32 bit mode & Logic 64 bit mode).

Hope this helps.

OK.
Thanks for the info.
I've never used the DLS plugin before but I've been trying to get your suggestion to work.
It seems that the DLSMusicDevice is a sample format for the EXS sample player that involves a sample library of the QT Synth sounds. Right?
But I don't seem to have this library anywhere on my hard drive and can't find anyway to choose the corresponding sampler instruments to get the tones of the QT Synth instruments.
I know that the DLS samples are supposed to reside in the ~Library/ApplicationSupport/Logic/DLS Samples folder, but that folder doesn't seem to exist on my hard drive.
I can use the DLS Tracks to playback my regular EXS Sample Instruments but can see no way to trigger the QT Synth sounds.
Is the DLS Samples folder something that perhaps I chose not to install when I first installed Logic on my system?
If so, then how do I install it now?
I'll look on my Logic install disk when I get a chance.
Or am I off base and missing something else?

OK. I've got it happening now.
The trick is to insert the Program Numbers for the QT Synth sounds within the Event List on the DLS tracks and then those sounds do play back.

Little confusing and counter-intuitive, but it works.

Thanks.

Hi guys,

The Apple DLSMusicDevice plugin uses the "QuickTime Music Synthesizer" as sound bank, responding to Program Change, CC, having Reverb controlled via CC91 etc. No problem here - I can use it in 64 bit mode too.
There is one problem if you try to load it as a "Multi-Timbral" synth - the Level & Pan ! That's why I'll show an example where you have to load 16 Software Instrument DLS instances.

Example:

1. Open the "New Tracks" dialog, choose "Software Instrument", type 16 in the "Num" (do not check Multi-Timbral). Logic will create 16 Software Instrument tracks in the Arrange set to ch.All.
2. All tracks will be selected in the Mixer (if not select them) and load -> AU Instruments >Apple>DLSMusicDevice. Note the plugin will be set to "QuickTime Music Synthesizer" which is gray.
3. Go to the Environment Mixer or select track by track in the Arrange and assign each track, (Software Instrument DLSMusicDevice) instance to ch.1-16.
4. Now you can draw or place existing SMF tracks on these DLS tracks and try. As I said before if you start to compose new tracks you have to use the Event List and create Program Change, CC 7,10,11,91 etc at the beginning of each track.
