Logic Pro 9 May have to join the Mac universe

If I cannot revive my old PC based Logic, I may have to join the Mac universe. Will Logic 9 read my old Logic 5 (windoze based) files? Any suggestions on what Mac to get to support 4 chan of audio recording thru a FireWire device?

In term of compatibility, Logic 9 does read Logic 5 files. In terms of the PC to MAC part of the equation, I _think_ you should be okay; but I'm not certain.

As far as four channels of audio recording via firewire, any modern Mac can easily handle that.

Eli, can you confirm at which stage of Logic development the files are no longer directly accessible with Logic 9? I have many older files, and as we know, some need to be opened in Logic 7 then saved in 7 in order to be openable in 9.

This may be important info for the OP as although Logic 5 is mentioned, people often have files older than their last update.

FWIW, I have opened considerable numbers of Logic 5 PC files with Logic 8 and 9. It always worked, apart from losing settings in VST Plugins, although in many case the corresponding Audio Unit was actually recognized and loaded. The other thing to watch out for is whether the old files were created with Universal Track Mode on or off. If it was off in 5, you need to switch off UTM in Logic 9 before loading the file. If UTM was on in 5, it needs to be on in 9 (which is the default).

Files from Logic versions older than 5 need to first be opened in Logic 5, 6 or 7, then saved, after which they can be opened in Logic 8 or 9.

Ok, I'll make a note to remember that as it's something that crops up here from time to time (I'm sure it's in the FAQs ?, if not we need it there)

It's a source of frustration to me that Apple don't accomodate customers switching from old versions by issuing a version of Logic 7 along with 9 so that people who do upgrade from L4 to L9 can open their files. Ah well.

There's one more layer of complexity to add to this conversion formula. While it can be said simply that and Logic files from v. 5 or higher can be opened in Logic 9, and that older files must first be converted in either Logic 5, 6, or 7 before being compatible with Logic 8 or 9; there is also the issue of Power PC to Intel compatibility to contend with.

Logic 7.2.x is the only version pre Logic 8 that can be opened on an Intel Mac. And all Macs are currently Intel. So, to convert older files now, using a current Mac, you specifically need to use Logic 7.2.x to do the conversions from older formats.

Good point. Eli. It would theoretically be possible to use a ppc version of Logic running in Rosetta on an intel Mac with an older OS than 10.7 (which no longer has Rosetta), but that's probably not such a great idea ...

I think it would be great if somebody could offer a file conversion service. You email your old Logic files and get back Logic 7 files. I suppose (sadly) that would lay the person offering the service open to all kinds of abuse, viruses etc.

In your first post in this thread you refer to Logic 5. As we discussed, you should be able to open your logic 5 projects in Logic 9. Or are your projects from a version of Logic older than 5?

You are not going to be able to load them.

The best thing might be to look for a legit copy of Logic 7 on ebay, even Logic 7 express may do the trick (can anyone confirm that?) so that you can convert your old projects.

Logic 9 really is great compared with L5, and even 7 or 8. It's a whole new ball game. Just very sad about the backwards compatibility.
