Logic Pro 9 iOS more for Logic 9

Which one are you using? How's it working?

Most look like overkill for me, but thats okay... I only need to start and stop the transport, go into and it of record, mute tracks and create new takes (although it appears that Logic can be set to do that automatically..l I'm new to the program, after 20 years using MOTU stuff).

You haven't said which iOS device you want to use.

If you have an iPad, there are several controller apps for Logic. Problem is that the better ones are around $50 each but there is an option that is cheaper and possibly more useful.

Take a look at Air Display:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-display/id368158927?mt=8

Basically it turns your iPad (or iPhone) into an extra screen for your Mac. As such, you can drag any Logic window onto the iPad and work remotely. I've never really had the need for a controller but I've found Air Display works very well indeed.

Hope this helps....

Hi Jim,

Be aware that you need to have your Mac and the iPad on the same network. If you don't have a home network, it's easy to set up an ad hoc network.

There are also some specific controller apps out there, though I haven't tested them so I can't make recommendations. Other folks here might be able to....

Colin, that's no problem... the requirement is the same for DP Control. While it is my day job, my studio is in my home, and the studio Mac Is hard wired to the router that serves all our iDevices.

Pete, I can't believe I forgot about TouchOSC. A lot of the MOTUNation guys use it... I'm a bit daunted by the set-up commitment, but I dig the idea of the flexibility. Colin's suggestion would be more direct, but I also see a lot of problematic reviews. This would be cheaper and seemingly more reliable.

Thanks... More research...

I bought this one

It does what you want but once you get into it, you'll see that you can adjust the parameters for plug-ins as well.

Downloaded them all, we'll see what works best for what activity.

AirDisplay is amazing... as a remote, I can shrink the entire Arrange window to fit and carry it into the live room... And SEE what I'm tracking. You end up with some mighty tiny controls, though..

I'll check out the others shortly. Thanks for all the input... 2 of the three solutions are things I never would have thought of on my own.

I use the both mentioned. They're very similar. Another very handy thing to use for general computer remote control is a VNC app. I mostly use "remoter VNC" but there are many out there. It allows you to access your Mac and do anything remotely.

So far V-Control Pro has been the most responsive controller app that I've tested.

Like Air Display you can view and control any app on your desktop.

Less latency and hangups than touch OSC.

Wow, I just watched a few of the YouTube demos of V-Control Pro. Very nice! I might pick it up sometime.

I also found the touch osc stuff wonky until I completely deleted it from Logic's controller setup window.R I had the iPhone and iPad versions installed. Apparently it only likes having one or other installed at one time or else it doesn't wok correctly. So now it's fine and does the stuff I care about, which is mostly just remote recording. I'm not a fan of any of the iPad apps for mixing for some reason. I think I just need to make myself use them more.

Well, this is a rather timely thread for me. This weekend I installed and started using DAW Remote HD on a 1st generation iPad. So far, so good.

Easy install and setup; on both the iPad side and the Mac/Logic 9 end of things.
Very good responsiveness (not perfect, but much better than I expected).
Jog wheel can be toggled between Jog and scrub, is very responsive in both modes.
Transport section works very nicely.

I'm using it primarily to control Logic from a synth that is too far from the Mac when I'm working solo in the studio. Works great in that context, I never have to look at the Mac's monitor, all the info I need is on the iPad's display, along with all of the controls I need.

I like it enough already, that I've started using it as a control service when I'm right in front of the Mac. We'll see how I feel about it after a full week of working with it.

One thing we do that may help the responsiveness is that we have two routers available to the studio. One has Internet access and is used for general Wi-Fi/Internet activity. The second router is an Apple Time Capsule with no Internet access that we network only the actual studio devices via (used for active project backups, to exchange files between the Macs and to connect iPads to use apps like Spectrasonics Omni TR and DAW Remote HD).
