Logic Pro 8 Roland JV-1080 cards not "seen" by Logic 8

Logician
I have a JV-1080 with "world" and "pop" cards installed.
So far, I haven't been able to find a way to access the patches inside the cards.
I created a MIDi instrument but how can I access the sound cards?

Thanks

To rwdillon:
You need to first get a conceptual overview of what you can and can't do.

Logic can only instruct the 1080 what patches to load - and it does this by sending bank and program messages. Logic is not able to get patch names from the 1080 or "see" what cards are installed - you have to configure this yourself.

Way back in the days of Emagic Logic, there was an app called SoundDiver (SD) which was a librarian and editor for hardware synths. SD could "talk" to Logic in those days and could transfer all the names of patch banks to Logic, which was very quick and easy. Nowadays, you have to achieve this in other ways.

You might find another patch editor/librarian app which will fetch all the patch names from the 1080. Alternatively, you could look on the web for lists of these patch names. Worst case - you have to type them in manually, one by one.

Where to put them?
You need to make a Multi-Instrument in Logic's Environment:
Go to the local [New] menu and choose [Multi-Instrument]
Click on each channel number in the block (1-16) to activate them.

Then, double-click on the header area of the multi and a new window will open. This is where the patch names go. It will default to General MIDI names. Click on the [Options] button and choose [Init names as numbers] to clear these names.

You'll see a menu called Bank Message which you click and hold to get a pop-up menu. Select [Roland JV-1080] - this will send the correct bank messages.

Then you need to enter the patch names. As I said, you can enter them manually one by one or if you have a list of the names, you can copy and paste them in blocks. Note that Bank 0 will be your first bank if Internal presets. As I recall, each card will take up 2 banks of names.

Then, in your arrange track, you check the Program box, then select a bank number and program change number. Try this to see if you get the right program changes on the 1080.

I have a 2080 with various cards, including the World Card, so if you want that patch list, send me a private message and I'll mail the list to you.

Hope this helps

Hey Colin. I'm Brett...I'm new to this site and the JV-1080. I picked it up the other day and I love it so far but I haven't configured it with my logic yet. I have the Super Sound Set, Techno and Dance cards. I read your directions but I was hoping that maybe you could help me further in figuring this out. I think it might help if I understood exactly how it was gonna work once its connected to my logic. A private message or reply would be greatly appreciated.
I followed your directions with success until this:
You lost me at the arrange track and program box. I couldn't find a program box to check.

I am a logic newbie...3 1/2 months in...I don't know what these terms mean either "logic environment" "bank message" and thats probably hindering this process as well...I don't mind taking the time to type each sounds name in individually. I just wanna get moving with the JV's sounds.

I should probably mention that my goal is to use the JV's sounds to assign them to my midi tracks in logic that are already programmed.
I will also want to use my midi keyboard with the jv as well but lets take it one step at a time lol.

p.s.

i should also mention that when i got as far as i did and set it up to the point before the program box, all the names from the jv showed up...so i wasnt sure if i should hit the innit thingy and retype them all again

These are areas of Logic that (sorry) it really is best to get to grips with by reading the manual. If there are parts that you don't understand there, then is the best time to ask more specific questions here and I'm sure you'll get some very helpful answers.

In the Logic 8 manual; there's a whole section on the Environment, but specifically you need p 880.

Hi Brett,

Whew - I haven't used hardware synths for ages (all softsynths these days) but I'll try to help.

There are 2 places to find this box - in the Arrange window and the Environment window. Check out my screenshot:
JV_prog.jpg

In the Inspector for the JV2080 track, I have circled the box. Same for the Environment window. When you click-hold on the little arrows, you should get a pop-up list with all the patch names.

Tell me if this works...

Environment across Projects

Hi Colin. I hope you are still following this thread.
I have followed the instructions below and created an environment for my JV-1080. However, it only shows on the library list of the project where I created the environment. Once I open another project, the environment (JV-1080 with manually inputed patch names) does not appear in that library list.

How do I get Logic to see my new external unit in every project I open?

Thank you!!

There's no "universal" way I know of to do this. You can simply copy the JV1080 Environment object which has all the names, then paste that into your new project.

Best would be to create an updated Template song which contains the object with all the names - that way it will be included in each new song you create if you choose that Template.

Hi Colin:

You sound like the person who could point me in the right direction. Just installed Logic Pro X (10.2) on MacBook Pro. trying to connect to my legacy synth Roland XP50 with three expansion cards. I have the patch list for all of them. I use to use this synth with my old Win XP based sequencer. For program change, needed to send MSB and LSB messages along with the patch #. How do I do that in Logic. There is no place to enter the MSB/LSB. May be LSB is the 'Bank' in the Track pane on the left? But then where is the MSB? How do I make that Bank Message in the Multi-Instrument window?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Bank Message for Roland XP50

Does anyone know how to send MSB and LSB from Logic Pro X to Roland XP50 fof program change? The Bank Message option in Multi-Instrument window lists JV 1080 but not XP50. Thanks.

@ avilall:

Try this:
Select the multi-instrument object in your Environment for the XP50.
(If you don't yet have a multi-instrument object, create one.)

In the local [Options} menu, select [Define custom bank messages...]
There is where you set the MSB and LSB parameters.

I don't know the parameters for the XP50 though....

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, I don't know how to create the Environment for XP50. Here is what I did:
Tracks > New External MIDI Track
double click the new track, it opens the Multi Instrument window.
In the 'Bank Message' drop down, 13 instruments are listed including "Custom Bank Maessage"
Three Roland instruments are also listed but not XP50. So I guess I need to create that.
When I select Custom Bank Message and the in Options drop down, there is no option for entering MSB/LSB.
By the way, I know the MSB/LSB parameters for XP50. But where to enter them???
Thanks again. It may be easier to connect thru my direct email is lall.nyc@gmail.com (I am near New York).

Hi. Maybe better to continue here in case anyone else is also interested.
You're looking in the wrong place...

Select your Multi instr and go to the LOCAL Options menu:
define.jpg

Select Define Custom Bank Messages...

Then you get a window like this:
custom.jpg

This example shows bank MSB & LSB messages. You just click-hold on the [Num] value to select either MSB (0) or LSB (32). It's the value column numbers that you'll need to find for your machine. The screenshot above is from my JV2080.

Hope this makes more sense now...

You said "Select your Multi instr". Where do I select that? Which menu is it hiding in? Have checked every menu and also Preferences. can't find that.

Sorry, I just noticed that you said above you created an external MIDI track.

You need to go to your Environment window. You can create a new layer or use an existing layer.
Go to the [New] menu and select [Multi-instrument]

See my first screenshot above... it's sitting there, called (Multi Instr.) It's a grid of 16 squares, where each square represents a MIDI channel. You switch the channels on by clicking a square.

Thanks...helpful thus far. Another question: On the Roland I have 11 banks, each with a unique MSB/LSB combination. So do I need to make all those 'instruments' in the same Environment window?

You configure the banks on one Multi-Instrument. In my second screenshot above, you'll see there are 4 banks configured e.g 0(a) 0(b) 1(a) 1(b) etc where each number is a bank, with MSB and LSB messages.
