Logic Pro (X) Logic Pro X is now out!!

I'm downloading as I type. Logic now comes with pitch correction, midi fx, a "live drummer" and many more new enhancements. You must be running OSX.8.4. I'm assuming it won't overwrite my L9 app but cloned by drive just in case.

I can't upgrade anyways as it would kill/cripple my workflow ATM.

How so Terry? I used LPX all day, no issues, everything we had (other than 32 bit support, and we can get that with VEPro) is still there, and it all worked as expected.

I'd suggest getting it and keeping LP 9.1.8 around anyways (which apparently is ok, no conflicts with the versions... me, I'm in deep already).

Happy it (LPX) finally came, still have a few major issues, and you HAVE to run 10.8.4 or better on a 64 bit machine.

Can't telly you haw happy I am that I bought a new MBP a few months ago, when I was very busy.

Off to play!

Sascha! Being an old Logic dog whose been with them since the first version and a long time reader/poster on the original LUG (the email version) I came here just to read YOUR view. :D

Thanks for the flowers... really, I appreciate that.

Well, from all I know so far, it seems absolutely safe to upgrade and run both versions side by side. But you better not take my word on it as I have no own experiences at all.
It also seems to load previous projects perfectly, minus the 32bit plugins you still might be using.

But then, I would probably go the safe route myself as well.
Fwiw, I'd be suspicious about the rather large library update - will all things really work the same in L9? Or will X replace, say, some EXS patches with new "round robin" ones which would be incompatible with EXS/L9 so you could only open existing projects in X but not in 9 anymore? Is there some reliable information about that? As we all know, many library related things are saved in "global" locations in Apple land (at least as long as you don't move them, use aliases and what not). So it might as well be that the updated library could overwrite certain things. That's defenitely something I wouldn't exactly trust. Hence, I'd create an image of my previous installation first. If at all...

Anyhow, personally, I can't afford a new computer ATM anyway (I'm just moving houses, which comes at some expenses). And that's what I'd defenitely need to run LPX (updating this old early 2008 MB would make close to no sense). I might be able to buy a new machine in around 1-2 months, but well, I'm not exactly sure whether it's gonna be a Mac.
Having said that, yes, I *am* looking for alternatives. But as folks have almost been slaughtering me on other places on the web for my, well, "opinionated opinion", that's the most I could probably say right now.
L9 is working fine for me (minus the fan noise my MB is producing... headphones all the time, yay!), and that's pretty much about it.

Cheers
Sascha

I'm on first gen Mac Pro. Can't update past Lion IIRC. There is a work around but it's quite involved and I don't have the time for it. I also have new processors I'd like to pop into the MAc Pro but I don't have time for that either.

I'm thinking of waiting for the next Gen Mac Pro trash can and getting it. Going to be costly once I add all the peripherals I'm going to need but so far it's the most 'logic(al)' way of getting the update and overall improving speed on my host.

Yeah-that would scare the hell out of me, losing any of my EXS instruments or having them 'modified' in some way. I tend to tread slowly in most of these things. I was on L7 for YEARS after folks were on L8 and then 9 so It doesn't bother me. The new goodies do intrigue me and when I went from 7 to 9 I certainly enjoyed the new features.

I'm like you Sascha, I've always kept my eyes open for something else but I'm getting to the point where I've spent a good portion of my life on Logic and I'm afraid at my age I'm settled in. :errr:

Seems that all Sampler Instruments (User) are now here:
Yourdrive/Users/yourname/Music/Audio Music Apps

worse, I try to keep all my samples on a separate fast drive, so each update /upgrade gives me headaches. Still haven't figured out why Battery 3 update installer doesn't find my existing file structure

Fabulowsky: I was thinking, hey, wait till its stable but, like you, I've been on this train since Atari days and it just didn't make sense to wait. I still have Logic Pro 9 should things go badly wrong, but I know that I'll be tenning sooner or later, and IME sooner is better for learning and troubleshooting.
I've loaded a current project, audio;software instruments; plugins; and apart from crashing once on load (!) complaining about Melodyne, it has since behaved perfectly well and I am considering compiling a suite of 4 current projects in X.
I just hate the dark skin and would put background appearance at the top of my new wishlist. Text simply doesn't leap out as it used you.
I am keen to test the Melodyne-type tools, to see whether they are worth using in place of Melodyne. I doubt it. Melodyne is hugely sophisticated.
I quite like that my loops library has grown, especially the 12/8 jazz drums :)
Downloading all sorts of stuff a I type - keen to try the string orchestra and the fender rhodes.
But frankly the 3rd party plugins I have suit me just fine and are probably better anyway.
I think that this application is an amazing buy for newcomers, but I've yet to be convinced that the new tools are a great leap forward for me.
One thing I am really keen to explore is the score page, to see whether they have made serious improvements

Sadly no real improvements as far as a final session quality output. but XML export is great for some people and a few other little bits and pieces.

Looking on the bright side, they obviously tested this a lot more than they did with FCPX, and we should count our blessings it opens old projects and doesn't have that stupid saving in only one location "feature" you have with FCPX and so many new applications. We still have "save as" instead of duplicate.

Auto save, and I think the undo now works for closed and reopened projects again (need to double check that though)

And Drummer is very very good and much more powerful and pro than its "garagebandy" look would imply, can't wait for them to add a few jazz drummers though.

Flex Pitch, how about that then?

I think there is a limit of 5 Mac Machines that an App can be run on. You have to Authorise the Mac to run the software, if you try and do it too many times, it ask you to De-authorise one of them.

Since Apple bought Redmatica, did they incorporate any features of EXS Manager or Auto Sampler into LPX?

I had a look, does not seem to be here yet, also checked exs24 options hoping to find intelligent mapping new feature but not yet ...
Still have my redmatica stuff, should still work in ML gotta check that btw :)

No Redmatica stuff in LogicX, no new EXS24 - too bad
Here's something to consider: Keymap had a harmonic resynthesis feature (that gave the user the controls to tune each sample in an instrument) that I'm willing to bet influenced Logic's new Pitch correction feature.

We're all expecting Keymap, Pro Manager etc to appear in Logic as we knew them. And hopefully they will to some degree in future releases.

Please hurry up...

Hey Eli, any word on when or if you'll be putting out a groove3 series on the new L10? I have a subscription to G3 but might pop for a macprovideo subscription for the next week to get a jump on things.

Hey Dave,

We absolutely will be putting out lots of new material for Logic X:D Doug and I and our publisher have been on the phone all day planning it all out. I'll be doing a Logic X Explained series, which is still a few weeks away. Plus both Doug and I will be doing several new shorter series targeting the specific new features in lots of glorious detail!

Hi,

I followed your excellent lessons on groove3.com. I saw today the announcement for the Logic Pro X tutorials. Can't wait :), I have a yearly subscription to groove3...

By the way, app store+ credit card is soooo dangerous. Couldn't resist buying LPX...

No upgrade price.

You're not wrong...but I'm going to take issue with that anyway. ;)

In the old days, Logic was $499 (or more!) and you had a $199 upgrade. Since the Mac App Store doesn't really allow "upgrade pricing" easily, what Apple has done-rightly so, IMO-is they in effect give everyone the "upgrade" price.

So I'd agree that there is no upgrade anymore...but I think we all, in effect, are paying the "upgrade price."

Pretty cool, eh?

And this precipitates another question. I've been using Logic since version 4 and each upgrade had certain requirements. In the early days you can to have the dongle from the previous version plugged in in order to upgrade, then you had to have the previous version installed complete with valid serial number before you could upgrade. This presumably eliminates those requirements. Great! But I also see that Logic X will open projects created in previous versions of Logic. So how does that work if said project uses 32 bit instruments/effects?

You need to have 64 bit versions of those Instruments or Effects installed. Logic X is 64 bit only, it can not run in 32 bit mode, and the AU Bit Bridge is gone. If your AUs are 32 bit only, they will not load in Logic X, but a project containing should, you will then get warning messages that some AUs are unavailable or need to be updated. It could also make sense to use the import track function. I suggest you try both opening your L9 projects in LX, as well as using the track import function.

kind regards

Mark

Hey guys!
Fun to read all the comments on the new version of Logic.
I am of course anxious to upgrade myself, but am still on 10.6.8 and it has been working well for some time.

I went to the app store and read comments on people who upgraded to Mountain Lion, and there are a huge amount of complaints of computer slow downs and crashes.

Are you guys finding 10.8.4 to be okay? Are there any caveats or installation advice I should be aware of to make the transition as painless as possible?
I'm on a Mac Pro Dual Quad core 2.8Ghz purchased late 2008.

Thanks!

I'm on a 2008 iMac and I had the same concerns. I finally wound up upgraded to 10.8 when I discovered that iPhoto on 10.6 couldn't handle the raw files my new camera was producing. Logic 9 works fine on 10.8 on my machine but I did notice that with 10.8 I had to set the midi channels in advance for Kontakt 5 and SampleTank 2.5. I didn't have to do that with 10.6. No big deal.

If the plug-ins have been updated to 64-bit effects, the song should open with all the old plug-ins as you expect, just the updated versions. However, for plug-ins that haven't been updated to 64-bit, they won't be available and will have the line through them in their insert slot and be bypassed.
