Logic Pro 8 Tracking a big session, any advice?

I have not used Logic to do any drum sessions as I'm still fairly new. This might be a deal where I'm recording 10 (or more) tracks at once. I don't anticipate any problems but, since I haven't done it yet, maybe there are some "quirks" to expect. My guess is that I'd probably have to monitor through my hardware (motu hd192 using cuemix) as Logic probably won't be able to handle software monitoring at a 64 buffer setting without having some problems. I could try that of course as that would make things much easier. I guess that was my biggest concern. That, and the unknown!

However I would say that you should just be aware that CueMix can (under certain circumstances) mess around with Logic's levels. I know this is not supposed to happen, and I haven't really used CueMix a lot so maybe it was operator error - but I noticed that sometimes when I changed levels in CueMix they would change in Logic's inputs as well.

I think this was when I used the trim controls at the top of the CueMix strip - not the level faders. I guess the main thing I am trying to say is that CueMix does add a level of complication to the setup. Make sure you do a dry run first (if you haven't already done this session.)

Hi Blair,

The way I see it, Cuemix is _supposed_ to affect the level reaching the inputs in Logic. Isn't that what those trim buttons are for? If they're not going to affect the level, than what use are they? Seriously, I'm not being sarcastic - I'm curious what other role those trim buttons could be useful for.

I always feel like I am stumbling around when I am adjusting things in Cuemix - never quite sure the effect it will have until I test the changes from within Logic. I agree that, powerful as control panels like Cuemix are - they do put an additional load on the brain (well, mine anyway) in terms of keeping track of all the signal flow.

Hi Eli

This is exactly my point about CueMix. When I started using it I assumed that it was NOT going to affect anything in Logic - only the Cue sends. MOTU didn't seem to provide any explanation that the signal was actually being sent on to Logic THROUGH CueMix. So imagine my surprise when I adjusted some signals using the trim controls (just like you would on a mixing board) and found my levels changing in Logic!

If you think about it - when you are adjusting a hardware mixer adjusting the trim or the channel fader will both adjust the signal's ultimate level, wherever you have it routed. In fact, if I were going to use the hardware mixer analogy, the trim controls WOULD affect the cue sends, but the channel faders would not (if cues are set pre fader, of course)

So, as I was saying to the OP - beware of the additional complexity when using Logic and CueMix, and work things out in advance unless you want to do your head-scratching with clients present ;)
