Logic Pro 8 Editing Audio

When editing audio in the sample editor, i highlight what i want to cut out and then i click delete. I can play and hear what i have highlighted so i know what im deleting, but is there a way that i can play and hear everything except what is highlighted, so that i will know what my edit will sound like before i actually delete what is highlighted. Sometimes i cut to much by accident and then i cant get it back, and if i could playback everything except what is highlighted, before its deleted, this would help me prevent this. Any tips or clues?

Thank you

You can't do this in the sample editor. But you can use the skip cycle in the arrange window to audition the cuts as you are describing.

So, basically, set your region up in the arrange window, set the skip cycle for the part you want to cut out. Then play the file from before the skip cycle, and it will skip over it and then continue from the point the cycle finishes at.

audio reverb

Is there any way to extend the reverb or length of a note- to sustain it a little longer. I cut to much, by accident, off one note in audio and im wondering if theres still hope to extend the note at all?

thanks

Why not go back to your arrangement and start again?

It sounds like you are relying on destructive editing using the sample editor, where you would be much better off doing non destructive editing in the arrange window. However, as you are not providing any information about your system, the type of project and so on, it is impossible to give more precise advice.

ok, sounds good, i'll check out the skip cycle, and go back and try to retrieve some files i messed up and try to do more in the arrange window. I'm doing a piano recording, and its on audio, not midi, since i used professional microphones. I'm using logic pro 8 and have a mac os x 10.5.7

the reason why i was not using the arrange window for editing was because i couldnt get it large enough to see- like the sample editor would blow things up, but i'll experiment more with it. Thanks

ok this question may sound dumb, but im just getting into this, so thanks for your help.
How do you set the locators where you want them instead of having to go back and always drag them after you click "set locators." Is there a way to set them where you click instead of having to always drag them from some long location that always happens when you click set locators?

There are key commands for set left locator and set right locator. Use those. Then just use the "cycle" command to turn the cycle on/off. By default it is the / key on the numeric part of your keyboard, of you have a regular full extended keyboard (ie: not a Macbook keyboard or wireless keyboard)

And as far as editing in the Arrange Window, if you zoom the track vertically big enough, you should be able to get a plenty big display of the waveform to work with.

I am assuming that "where you want them" might have something to do with audio or Midi regions, in which case ...

Select a region you want to work on. Use the Key Command "set locators by regions/events". One of the most useful Logic KCs around IMO.

kind regards

Ok, i know how to set the locators now, but i put them in reverse for the cycle, so that i could play my audio track to see how my cut will sound before i cut it, and i clicked cut section and it didnt cut the section that have the green and black striped locators. it cut some other section? why, and how can i get it to cut the section its high lighting in the cycle

i figured it out tonight, the way to enable data to be cut if the locators are reversed is to put the scroll arrow on the highlighted locators which will turn it to a hand signal, then press "J" which reverses them so the material can be deleted.

It's funny how 2 of the guys that post on this forum have some great tutorials out at groove3.com but don't pitch them (very humble). So, I'll pitch for them. Check out their videos. You can rent them on a monthly basis and have these and other questions answered. It's how I incorporated Logic into my studio and it's now my main DAW, recording full time, 5 days a week. When you rent you have access to all the tutorials on the website. Highly recommended.

Many thanks for the kind words daveyboy. That $20.00 should be arriving in the mail soon ;)

Seriously, Eli and I can market the crap out of these but I think comments like yours are what are truly more convincing - someone who's used the product and likes it. Thanks again!

Hi, I'm looking up groove3.com to check out your dvds and its been told that people can rent them. How is this possible?

You watch them online with their flash player. It's awesome! In 2 days I had seen all the logic 8 videos so 1 month was plenty. But, I've since rented 2 more months here or there when there's new stuff. I learned T-Racks and auto tune evo on there, along with some newer Logic tips. I also have Pro Tools so it's nice checking out some of those. Even if you don't use pro tools you'll pick up recording/DAW techniques that you can apply to any DAW.

That's an lot of Logic in two days!

@pianistguy: You can sign up for monthly (or yearly) online subscription and view at your own pace. Most people I know took a little longer than daveyboy to get through them, but it's personal preference.

A lot of times when I watch these things I've already been using some software to a certain extent so I can learn it just by watching a video away from my studio. Mr. Zanger does a great job explaining things and makes it easy to learn.
