Logic Pro 8 Choosing a compressor

Hallo everybody
my first time here. I'm searching for a very good compressor plug in. I'm using Logic 8. I'm a composer of contemporary music, mainly acoustic. I use the VSL strings and the Akoustik Piano by Native Instrument, just to let you kow a little bit "my world". Last night I've downloaded the demo version of three compresssors "T-Racks 3" by IK Multimedia. They seem to sound very good, I like very much the Fairchild 67 even if it displaces my knoledge based on Logic compressor.
Well, I'm not excperienced at all about audio tecnique and mastering, I'm studing it so, before spending money, I'd like to have some suggestion from more excperienced people.

As far as all round great compression goes its hard to do better than the Sonalksis SV-315 Mk2 compressor. It use it for many things, it has a more vintage sound. Also the Logic compressor aint half bad either. The Wave Arts Track plug has a really excellent dual compression setup also. IMO it's a good idea to have a couple of great compressors that you know intimately than rack of them that you use rarely.

Flux and Nomad Factory

Flux makes extremely transparent high end dynamics and EQ plug ins:

They work fabulously in Logic.

I do however think that Logics own built-in dynamics processors hold up quite well to third-party ones in many cases, especially when you have really-well produced source material like the VSL and NI Akoustik Piano virtual instruments.

Lately I have really been into the new "Classic Compressor" single from the new T-Racks bundle. I love it - at the moment. It' s my personal new "flavor of the month". It's definitely got it's own sound and a little goes a long way with it.

But all the other mentioned are excellent. I have used the Sonalksis extensively and love it too - it's easy to get a good sound with it. And Logic's compressor is great these days as well - as of version 8 of Logic that is.

I have a lot of 3rd party compressors (waves, uad, psp, t-racks) but I have to say Logic's compressor (and other fx) is really surprisingly quite nice. If you're new then I'd say use that for a while and learn about compression. If you're going the t-racks route then I'd say get the whole deluxe set as that will give you all the individual plugins as well and you can find it for a little over $300.

I find it's usually easy to get very good results from the Waves Renaissance compressor. On the other hand, I was never a fan of the Logic compressor.

Colleagues speak very highly of the Sonalksis, however.

The Logic 8 compressor kicks ass though! It's one of the best software compressors imnsho

Well, I really don't know how to thank you all. So many precious informations! I guess I'll become a friend of this wonderfull forum.
So... I'm glad to learn that, also for very experienced people, Logic 8 compressor is worthy to be used. I've spend some time on it (DVD Tutorials, articols about comprression etc.) and now I can say that I've understood the theory of compresssion. The practice will come. In Logic compressor the parameters are very clear and it's easy to apply the theory on it.
I've to say that I like very much the sound of the T-Racks 3 too. I agree with Eli, it put a special "skin" on the sound, so I guess I'll use Logic AND T-Racks. About this, I would like to have a manual for the T-Racks because the parameters are different from what I'm used to, specially in the Fairchild 67. Please, to who knows these Plug ins, could you tell me where I can find some instruction?

I definitely agree on that! I don't own the UAD plug-ins at my own facilities though, but I'm happy with Logic 8 compressors, Sonalksis and Logic's Multipressor (not MP on a mix, just to "air up" vocals or wind instrument tracks). They all sound different and complement each other well. When working with laptop performance rigs in Bidule I depend on Sonalksis and the free Apple Multi Band Compressor (BTW almost identical to Logic's MultiPressor) and then I often miss the Logic 8 compressor for its transparency (not saying I dislike the "vintage vibe" of Sonalksis, but different tasks need different treats as you know)

Oh yeah, for crazy bang for you buck, the URS Channel Strip Pro!!! It has a ton of classic compressor emulations (1176, la2a, la3a, etc, etc....) plus 4 classic eq emulations. When you count all the variations it's truly an outstanding value. You will need an ilok though.

Has anyone tried the Rocket compressor or Major Tom Compressor from Stillwell Audio?
They are very hi quality plugins unlimited evaluation, very reasonably priced.
