Logic Pro 10 v 9

A little bird has told me that Logic Pro 10 has significant improvements to the score editor- something which I feel is long overdue. Is this true?

Now a basic question- how can I record ornaments (trills etc) but avoid the notational gobbledygook that results in the score window?

Has anybody managed to make the quantize function/ score editor cope with quintuplets, septuplents and (I think) undecuplets, i.e. anything that involves prime numbers like 5 or 7 or 11? (yes I know 3 is one but if it couldn't cope with them it wouldn't be worth having!)

Definitely! Nothing major but many details to ease the work flow. see for yourself, check the manual.

Could you be more specific about what you mean by notational gobbledygook?-

For creating/editing tuplets (of all kinds)...

Ornaments

Logic will clearly try to notate ornaments- a bit like music theory exams. No player wants to see this however in an instrumental part. Is there a quick way to provide a visual version with using hidden notes. Even better is there any way of inserting a trill/ mordent etc "alias" ( obviously in step time!) which would give a correct visual AND aural version? Asking a lot I expect!!

No, because notation is, and must be, a simplified representation of what actually happens. You want the notation to look as you expect. Other musicians may notate the same part in a different way.

Just one example: A quarter triplet with a rest in the middle is an exact description and can be played like written. At double speed it is only used for certain musical genres. Double again and you end up with a 16th triplet without the middle note. I think nobody would write it this way and, honestly, we are not playing it like written. At this point the notation loses the connection to the real world. We would write dotted eights and make a note for the interpreter: "Play with triplet feeling".

On one side we expect a program to record and repeat our performance as exactly as possible, on the other side we want it to make human decisions for the display, according to our personal musical understanding. This will not happen very soon.

Maybe someone will write an application that is trainable to individual interpretation styles. You would play a couple of mordents in different tempi in your usual manner, apply a level of tolerance and later the program could detect and display this phrase independently from the actual data. But if your mood, skill or instrument changes, you get to train the program again. For the faster phrases you may need different settings for morning and evening 😉

You could indeed hide the undesired notes (via the attributes parameters) from the staff and add independent notes (that won't playback) and desired trills objects in your score. AFAIK, that has to be done manually. But honestly, the procedure is only few clicks...
