Hi all. Got some old songs I made years ago on a friends Mac running Logic 4.8 in OS9. I know run Logic Express 8. Am I right in thinking I need to use an interim version to make these old files usable? If so, where can I get an old copy?

The usual second hand sources - online auction resources, local music magazines etc. Just be careful that you are being offered a genuine Logic 5, 6 or 7, which should include an authorized XSKey. There are lots of pitfalls involved in buying used software.
