Logic Pro 9 Adding Apple Loops

Hmm I don't use loops much but now I'm working with a client who bases everything on these loops.
My question is when I open "media" I get the option to choose between bin, loops, library and browser. In browser I can pretty much find anything but in loops I only get to see "Garageband" (in "all" but also in the drop down menu that reads "show all").
How do I add all the the jampacks to drop down there as well so when I click on ie tambourine in the loops menu I get to see all the tambourines I have available.
I'm pretty sure I used to have that but like I said, I don't use it that much.

Another thing is when I select "library" it is the library of channel settings, is this right. I can't find a way to browse anything there or change any settings whatsoever but maybe I haven't tried hard enough.

The library tab is for presets, showing what is highlighted (channel strips, intruments, effects), only Logic's presets

The browser is for ... ehem ... browsing your computer as to import settings from other songs, track import, etc

The bin tab shows all the audio data used in your project (whether on the arrangement or not)

Finally the loops shows all your apple loops installed in your computer.
Logic Studio Apple loops appear there so all 3rd party samples you'd installed.
If nothing shows then my guess is you didn't install the full content of Logic studio.

You may check in the finder what you have in these folders :

Mac HD > Library > Audio > Apple Loops > Apple
& User > Library > Audio > Apple Loops > User Loops

That's the problem, the loops are there. I can see them when I use the browse, and I can load them, prelisten etc. Still they are not in the loops department. There must be a way to choose which loops should be included there...
Like I explained in the first mail Garageband is there but none of the jampacks but they certainly are in the appleloops folder (Mac HD > Library > Audio > Apple Loops > Apple).

Have you tried deleting the current index files and re-indexing?
Also, the hierarchy is based on folders - if you threw all loops into one folder, that would affect the view.

Yep that's what started the problems. I was trying to get rid of some doubles and choose re-indexing which left me with only Garageband

Hi Henrik,

How did you re-index them? If you just right clicked in the Apple Loops Browser, that will only re-index the files that are in the User folder. That could explain your problem.

If you have others stored separately you need to re-index them the old fashioned way; by dragging and dropping the folders over the Loop Browser.

Ah that may be it, I did re-index by right clicking. What do you mean by the oldfashioned way. The loops are already placed in the apple loops folder

It's very easy. You need to know two things - I think you know both of them. Where your index files are (to be removed/deleted) and where you loops are (to be indexed).

With Logic closed, remove/delete index files, open Logic - open loop browser. Nothing should show. Open finder window - navigate to loops. You can drag multiple folders at once onto Logic's browser window (or you can do one at a time...). If they have been moved from Logic's default system drive location (I moved mine to an external drive, for example) you will be asked if you want to move them to the default location and then index them, or index them where they are. Your choice. Click index and it will be a few minutes if you do all folders at once....

That's exactly why you need to reindex them - the old fashioned way. The fact is that they are on your drive, but that the Loop Browser doesn't know about them - where they are, etc. That's what re-indexing will do. It will connect the Loops in the Finder to the Loop Browser's database functions.

Doug spelled out the steps perfectly. The one thing I would add is that I find that if you try and index too many folders at a time Logic could "choke" - ie: you're not sure what's happening, if it's crashed ro not. I would suggest not more than a few folders at a time. But that's my conservatice nature speaking 😀

I will try this asap thanks a lot everybody. I do wonder why they have disappeared in the first place but it seems fairly easy to get it back into working order.

But seriously, using folders is the key. The filtering is based on folders. It's been so long since I've done this, but I think if you open up a folder and drag the loops in, they will not be show as a subset of something else. You must drag the folder in to keep the upper level of organization.

A few folders at a time is fine. And yeah, it's critical to drag the actual closed folder and not the open contents, like Doug says. That way they will be organized according to the folder structure - which is what you want.

I've tried dragging all folders at once on my system and it choked. And that's on an 8 core tower with only a few additional libraries. So, that's why I suggested smaller batches of folders rather than all at once.
