Logic Pro 9 Archiving using export, seems like a smart idea

I recently had another producer in my studio mixing. At the end of the session he exported the whole project using Logic's built in export command, primarily I think so that he has the same sounds on certain tracks where maybe he couldn't recall the session due to missing plug ins. In retrospect, this seems like a smart thing to do to all sessions when one is done with them. At least for me, when I'm done with a cd project and want to ensure I can recall things incase of missing plugins down the road. Are any of you guys doing this?

I occasionally BIP some software instruments, but this is something I have regetted not doing at times, when I need a total recall of a very old project. (I have a few that use an S1000 and various MIDI sound modules I no longer use).

However I tend to think mostly that if I'm opening up an old track, that I can do a better job now anyway with a clean sheet of plugins.

Sometimes I'm just grateful that I still have the old project at all, given that some of them got lost somehow over the years.

Your visiting producer may have been planning to mix in Pro Tools. I've spent so much time mixing in a PT environment that I find it easier now to mix my Logic creations in PT, so I do this all the time.

That said, I would sure like to have exported audio on a bunch of old sessions created when I had MIDI instruments I've since got rid of, but that would have necessitated recording them back into Logic, which I wouldn't have thought of back then...

I sometimes wish that, but then again, as I said above, it forces me to do a completely new mix rather than a clone or rehash of an old one, and sometimes that's a good thing.

I did actually mage to transfer some of my old sound module stuff to EXS24 via the Redmatica software whose name escapes me, but would have been too time consuming to do everything.

It's a super useful function and you can omit any effects and/or automation used so you just export the raw tracks; these are very useful pro options that allow use of files outside of Logic. I have taken to mixing in Reaper of late as I am a Nebula user and prefer the simple hyper-efficient mixing facilities of Reaper and its ability to freeze busses. I also prepare files to be mixed outside my little studio although this is rare I've done exactly that this week and it was a piece of cake. This used to take hours!

I for one am very grateful for this functionality.
