Logic Studio apps Assigning Midi Channels in MS

I am fully flummoxed and am hoping someone can walk me through how to set up individual midi channels for MS instruments. I am working with midi in PT 8 and have the audio (RME card running AES outs into my HD interface) and the sync (IAC buss) piece scoped out and it works great. Both apps running simultaneously in my Mac Pro. But I cannot figure out this midi channel business in Mainstage and it's making me nuts.

I have seen it described in broad terms (ie - go to the layout frame and have MS "learn" the control setup), but I am just not getting it.

If anyone is willing to walk me through the process in detail, I'd be really grateful!! The goal is to be be able to run a number of instruments on discrete midi channels with a PT 8 midi track as the midi source.

Thanks, Billy

Do you use the same IAC bus for syncing and for your controller messages? If yes, I don't think this is a good idea. Go to the Mac's Audio/MIDI Setup, create a second IAC bus and use this one for your control messages.

Changing learnded MIDI ports and channels on the layout page should be possible.

Thanks; that makes sense.

But, it's the setting of the midi channels/ports that seems very tricky since I have no hardware device for the layout to "learn"; it's just the midi coming from the PT learned midi track. I have tried to put a control in the layout designated to a specific midi channel or range of channels, but that does seem to not work. I am surely doing something wrong.

I will spend some more time with the manual, but it sure is confusing on this usually very simple process!

You don't necessarily need a hardware device. Mainstage learns from MIDI ports. If you have an IAC port activated it should show up in the portlist (= device list). Every available MIDI port from hardware and software is in the list.

I'm thinking you do have to have an object in layout mode assigned to that port so he can assign channel strips to individual MIDI channels.

Try as Peter suggests, but I couldn't get that to work - may have missed something. I was successful when I added a MIDI activity button in layout mode (you don't need to do a keyboard). Assign that to your IAC bus, and then when in Edit mode you can select the channel strip inspector MIDI tab and assign it to that (it may be by default). If you go into multitimbral, you can select MIDI channel(s) it (the channel strip) receives on.
