AU plug-in synths that are triggered by audio signals?

Okay plug-in experts, I need some advice:

I'm looking for an AU plug-in that is a synthesizer which is triggered by audio. In other words, it pitch tracks your audio signal to play its internal sound engine.

There used to be an OS 9 synthesizer plug-in that did this: Antares Kantos, which was a mono instrument, but a true synthesizer. (http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Dec02/articles/antareskantos.asp)
Unfortunately, Kantos was discontinued.

I don't think any of the built-in Logic plug-ins really are the same type of instrument Antares Kantos was; EVOC 20 TrackOscillator does pitch tracking and has formant filters, but it really is more of a vocoder.

Does anyone know any AU synthesizer plug-ins that can use mono audio signals to trigger its synthesizer? A fair amount of Software Instrumens these days offer audio inputs, but they just process the audio signal through the instrument's filters, and that's not what I'm looking for.

You could try the convert mono signal audio in Logic to Midi then use any synth you like.:)

Just thinking about what Alan wrote ... and this is entirely premature speculation on my part Orren, but perhaps the much anticipated Melodyne DNA will be well suited for converting audio to midi, and then doing what you are thinking of? Or do you need a real time solution?

Both are good ideas, but I'm thinking of a "realtime" instrument, one that I could play live. For example, the Roland "VG" series of DSP processors offer fairly "standard" amplifier models, but then they also offer synthesizers that take your guitar sound, and trigger modeled analog oscillators, etc. from the pitch. Now, I'm sure that Roland uses their own custom chips so as to get latency down to a level nearly unachievable with a general purpose CPU, but the idea is the same—Kantos was able to do it.

So the Audio to Score and Melodyne DNA are definitely stuff I'll try "after the fact," but there doesn't seem to be a "before the fact" option out there.

I too have been looking for such a plugin. I specifically want to perform live midi trombone pieces. I would need a mono microphone input converted to midi. I had located a piece of yamaha hardware to do this, but it has been discontinued and a logic compatible plugin would be advantageous.

The only MIDI converter plugin for realtime I know is the WIDI converter. It works reasonable but the output has fixed velocity which makes it useless for you, unless you are rather after special effects. Maybe someone of the Max/MSP fraction has made a converter. But you will not get typical trombone behavior.

Apart from sound-to-MIDI conversion, what about a wind controller, EWI4000, WX5 or EVI?

You know, if all you need is a single mono 1/4" input that will output MIDI, this product might do it for you:

What I'm talking about is more of an effect that you can control with an audio instrument, instead of a MIDI instrument.

Expert Sleepers just released an instrument that does what you want. It's called Oomingmak, and it takes a sound source and synthesizes it.

Here's what they say:
Oomingmak is a pitch- and envelope-tracking (re)synthesis effect. Or, to put it another way, if you feed a sound source (e.g. a guitar) into Oomingmak it will come out sounding like you're playing an analogue monosynth. Or maybe something else entirely.

And it's only $30.00.
