Q: working on project in logic express 8
i need to know the right settings for my microphone levels
db settings on interface
to compress during recording or not?
16 or 24 bit for basic mix + mastering

basically the perfect set up for a smooth, basic recording with enough room ready for a basic mix + mastering
i have a simple home set up in order to work on project on my own time, in my own space before mix +
mastering either at home or else where.

thank you, appreciate all input

basic dynamic microphone (akg d2200s)
interface (m-audio profire 610)
macbook pro with logic express 8 + garageband
external hard drive (lacie 500gb d2 quandra)

Since you rig is lower cost already, purchase an ART Pro Cannel Mix Pre/compressor/eq. Then you can do some of your compressing before you hit Logic.

The main reason is that if you record into Logic and use Logic's compression on playback you are going to have a recording that has a very high dynamic range, a good thing, but not really what you might want, because it will make thing very difficult for the singer to hear themselves when they sing, as well as force you to record through Logic's buffers, usually adding a latency most singers don't like at all.

I own a couple of these, and have purchased new high end tubes for them, and thet sound remarkable good for a system that cost me less that $1,00 for 2 mic pre's.

I get a great level into my system overall, and I can add a bit of EQ before I hit the system, and also use the variable roll off to get rid of any subsonic material my mics pick up.

Once you have a decent setting with your Pro Channel/mic pre, you will be able to add less processing later while having a better signal on input.

That's my opinion, although I'm sure that others here will say that is not such a good way to do it, especially if you don't understand how to use this type of a device. I stand by what I say, it works very well for me.

Use 24 bit 44.1 sample rates for your recordings. 24 bit recording will give you more headroom compared to 16 bit, and will be a little more forgiving in managing your levels. Make sure you are not clipping your input levels, keep it out of the red.

+1 for the ART Pro Channel strip. It's a mic pre-amp/compressor/EQ all rolled into one package. Great bang for the buck!
