Logic Pro Beat mapping: Has Pro 11 made it useless for what I used to use it for?

In Pro 10, I used to record a free form midi software region, and use beat maping to align the bars in the score to the performance, without changing the performance. Now in 11, everything I try conforms the tempo of the performance to the beat map track. I've tried enabling "protect midi" but that seems to have no effect. Any tips? Thanks.

Solution
Solved it!

In the Logic 11 manual, they have a list of "new features of..." going back to version 10.0. At 10.75, they listed "Free form recording". Aha! Searching that phrase in the manual, I learned what it is and how to use it. It is much simpler than the old beat mapping strategy, but I wish they would have made reference to it next to the beat mapping section ("If this is what you want to do, you can't do it anymore with beat mapping, see instead..."). In fact, they wrote that beat mapping in 11 would still work for my purpose, which it didn't. And, I have yet to figure out what checking "Protect midi" in the automatic beat mapping window of 11 does.

Beatmapping still works like before, but you have to SMPTE lock the region.

When I do it with MIDI I usually SMPTE lock my original recorded MIDI region, then make a copy of it, move the first MIDI note to beat one of a measure, then SMPTE lock this MIDI region, then start beatmapping.
