Logic Pro Beat Mapping

I'm attempting to make a tempo map to a track recorded without a click. I used to be able to do this but its been some time......... I've read the manual several times but i find it a little ambigous. So I have tried beat mapping the snare or bass drum or hih hat but it just doesn't seem to work. Anybody got some advice please? Thanks in advance.
