best hardware for logic studio 9

Hi all,

I'm pretty new with macs...I'm thinking of using logic studio 9 for composition purposes...I have a few questions regarding which hardware would suit my usage the best.

1. Would the 15' MBP with 3.06 intel core 2 duo with 8GB memory allow me to open up lots of tracks plus tonnes of plugins at the same time without crashing?

2. If option 1 doesn't have the power what instead should I be getting? i.e. imac or macpro??

Any other issues plus tips I could have possibly missed? Please help..thx..

regards,
ben

Hi all,

... lots of tracks plus tonnes of plugins...

Ben,

You need to be a lot more specific before anyone can accurately answer you. I have a MacBook Pro (2.8 GHz) and an iMac (2.93 GHz), each with 4 GB RAM and they both have no problem running all of the demo projects that come with Logic at very low latency.

Everybody wants to run lots of tracks and tonnes of plugins. 🙂
We need to know more about how you work, what sort of music and more importantly, what sort of plugins you use.
All this ultimately depends on your budget for hardware.

thx for the replies so far....to be more specific, i would say most song would be guitars, bass, vocals via audio interface and the rest i.e. drums, synths....via Logic itself....i would say maybe at least 2 effects per track totalling to about 20 -30 tracks. Ok ...now would the MBP handle these tasks comfortably?

Why do you specifically ask about a laptop? Do you need the portability? Will you be working from one workstation at home? Don't get a laptop unless you need the portability. You'll get way more bang for your buck with an iMac or tower. Really, IMHO, the _ONLY_ reason to use a laptop as a DAW is if you specifically need the portability. Otherwise use an iMac or a tower.

And in terms of plug ins; you mention drums and synths, etc from Logic. Well, it's important to know which plug ins? Are you planning on running Omnisphere or BFD 2 for example? Those would be well served by a computer with much more ram. Are you planning on using Stylus RMX? That would benefit more from more CPU processing power. So, it depends which plug ins, and what your portability needs are, etc.

Copy that....BFD 2 uses ALOT of RAM!!!

Is a 16 gb ram with 2.8ghz quadcore intel core i7 imac is good enough for plugins like (Digidesign Eleven, Waves Plat, IK Bundle, Native Instruments Komplete, DFH Superior 2, BFD 2, EastWest Gold Symphonic). Besides logic studio, I might have protools 8 le and reason too. Any tips on how to configure a mac for this kinda setup? Thanks
