Logic Pro 9 Bird chirps turned into tone

I had a patch of bird chirps which was in the library and now it has turned into just an annoying tone, like a low sign wave. Is there a way to re-establish the patch?

You get the sine wave in EXS24 if it can no longer find the samples. Could it be you accidentally deleted them?

I use a nice application called EXS manager for reuniting the instruments with samples if they have somehow got "disconnected",

Do you get a dialogue box saying that the samples can't be located? If so you will see the names of the samples and maybe you could do a search for them.

Thank you for that connection. $50 for EXS manager, ... I'd think there would be a way to track these files down and reconnect them within Logic. I don't know what it is, though.

There is a way in Logic, but for complex instruments, you may be happier to pay the 50 bucks. :eeek: EXS Manager is superb by the way, and very useful for re-linking samples to instruments when you've bought large 3rd party libraries.

In EXS24, click on the [edit] button top right. The EXS24 Instrument Editor window will open. Make sure the Zones button top left is selected.

Normally there will be a list of the samples used. If you double-click a sample name, the Sample Editor opens. I can't test this as all my instruments are working, but I seem to recall that you get an option to locate missing samples - you'll have to try a few clicks to provoke it.

You should at least be able to see the names of the audio files that should be associated with the instrument.

Sorry to be a bit vague - hope this helps....

I found refresh library in the Library pane. Maybe that got it back.

Now I'm back to the odd problem I was having with this same patch before, it doesn't pan.

Well, I reverted to the opened version because of trying different things for the pan problem and I got tones again. I opened the library and tried refreshing but it didn't work. I searched for the sound Nature Sounds and found two with the same name and different dates: 2011 and 2009. I wonder if that creates problems. When I highlighted the 2011 one and refreshed library, I still got tones. When I highlighted the 2009 one and refreshed library, I still got tones. I got what sounded like nothing. I tried choosing from the inspector too.

Thank you Colin for the tip about the EXS24. By opening up the Zones I could find the patch. But even better, I could find the audio file associated with the particular note, which meant I could drag it into an audio track instead of putting it in a midi track and having to insert a note.

It still doesn't work with panning properly though. The plus side is barely there. I think it might be a stereo file (the track has overlapping circles indicating stereo) where the bird chirping was on the left in the recording. In the waveform view I only see one wave form though, so how can I tell?
Thanks,

Try instantiating EXS as a mono instance instead of a stereo one. Also, remember that panning a sample playback only affects the position when the MIDI-on is received, you can't take a 3-second sample and pan it from left to right over 3 seconds. (If that's the effect you're looking for, you'll have to put it on an Audio track and pan it there) HTH

Right. That is what I figured out, and dragging the original audio file into an audio track I figured I could pan it. Panning was weak on one side so I conjectured that the bird chirping on the left must have actually been on the left in the original recording. This led on to my last question which was why is there only one wave form if it is a stereo track? Shouldn't there be a left and right waveform? It would be clear what is going on then.

Thank you for your help.

Yes. In fact it's the same song. It didn't register in my brain until last night that the midi note was playing a long sample and that panning doesn't work in midi until a note is retriggered.
Thanks again.
