Logic Pro Bounce Mystery

I'm doing some tests and comparisons, and something about the way Logic bounces a mix has me confused.

I have 23 test audio clips, a variety of recordings and test tones. All mono. Each of these has been processed to make a second inverted version. So 46 audio files in all.

I put these in a Logic project. All channels are set to -6db, with pan at 0. Stereo out is set to -3db, with pan at 0. Master is set to zero db

With all 46 tracks playing (mix 1), I get silence, and no activity on the Stereo Out channel. Exactly what you'd expect. If I mute the second set of 23 tracks (mix 2), I get a load of mixed noise and music. Again what you'd expect. If I must the first set of 23 tracks (mix 3), I get the same sound (presumably shifted a portion of a millisecond). What you'd expect. If I have any pair of tracks, an original and the corresponding inverted version, I get silence. If I play any one file, I get the expected clip. All is well.

If I bounce mix 2 using the Bnc button on the Stereo Out channel, I get an audio file. If I bounce mix 3, I get another file. If I bring these two bounced files into another Logic project, and zoom in, I can see that one is an inverted version of the other. If I play this project, I get silence. Again, what you'd expect. If I mute all tracks except the Stereo Out, the bounced file is silence.

Now the odd thing: if I bounce mix 1, I don't get a file of silence despite there being nothing at Stereo out. I get a file that is the same as the bounce of mix 2. I've done this over and over to make sure that all tracks are unmuted, and the stereo out channel shows no activity, and I get when playing silence on the mix before the bounce. Yet the bounced file is not silence.

Any ideas about what is happening?
