Logic Pro Bouncing issues

Music 1.0.6.10

I’ve been tearing out my hair because of a problem with Logic Pro. This listing is as much for you kind folks to look at as it is for me to try to spot where the issues might be coming from. So far nothing has come to light for me so…

If anyone needs further information I’ll [attempt] to get it for them.
************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
I’m experiencing a multitude of problems in Logic Pro and all of them are centered around bouncing and then transfer to Music. And the same thing occurs whether I’m doing the bounce in AAC, MP3, AIFF. The mode is always “offline.” I’ve become convinced that the problem exists within the bounce as old versions of the same project get placed in Music with no problems at all.

When bouncing down the process stops at 1:27. Although in the bounce window it shows the total length of the project accurately, which is easily twice as long.

Although the project volume is strong within Logic after I bounce and transfer it to Music it gets really low volume-at least 10db lower than it had been in Logic Pro. This happens either with or without “Overload Protection” on.

When I could complete a bounce of the project I would get a sound sort of like feedback. This seemed to be cured by upping the I/O Buffer Size to 512. I say “seems” as since I no longer can hear the completed bounce I don’t know if it’s still there or not.

Thinking that, perhaps, by accident I hit some key command I went through all of them but nothing stood out to me. However there’re just so many the possibility that one (or several) eluded me is definitely possible.

I wonder if the Right locator is set at 1:27, causing the bounce to stop there?

Is the Master Channel Strip fader lower than 0? Not the Stereo Out fader, rather the one to its right in the mixer.

Just a couple of spontaneous ideas...

Kind regards

First off thanks for the swift reply.

The answer to both of your questions is no.
Both the start and stop locaters read just as they should be encompassing the length of the song.
Although I rarely look/use the Mixer window the Master Channel Strip volume there is sitting at 0.

That's a series of requests to be met, let's check one by one.

Can you bounce any range in a new and otherwise empty Project, with just one audio Track playing ? There is a priority list which range actually gets bounced:
- if nothing in the Main window is selected, the bounce goes from Project Start Marker to Project End Marker
- if Regions are selected, the Bounce goes from Start of first selected Region to End of last selected Region
- if a Range is selected this will get bounced
- if Cycle is active, this will define the Bounce range, regardless of Region or Range selection
- any *changes* in the Bounce dialog's start and end position will override any previously set Bounce ranges.

Make sure there is enough room on your disk.

First bounce uncompressed audio, try both WAV and AIF. Does that work ? If so, can you bounce to MP3 or AAC ?

Have you tried a Realtime Bounce instead of Offline ?

Any strange 3rd party plugins anywhere in the Project ?

Now, for the sound issue:
- bounce with Overload Protection Off
- make sure you don't clip the Stereo Out
- make sure both Stereo Out fader and Master Fader are both at unity
- bring back the bounced file into a new, otherwise empty Project. Does it play at the same volume ?

Once you have a file (WAV, MP3 or AAC) that you know has the correct volume, import that into Music manually. Is the volume as expected ? If not:
- disable all sound and level changing features in Music
- monitor Music through he exact same signal path as Logic
- turn up the Mac's volume

If all that fails and your music, while being played back correctly, still sounds less loud and fat than other people's - learn to mix.

Learning to mix is a honourable venture, so there is no insult implied. You didn't mention that your mixing skills are impeccable and perfect even when you don't use the Mixer window, so I wouldn't know.

When I bounce to AIFF I get a spurious file.
When I bounce to AIFF and mp3 I get a spurious AIFF file and a CORRECT mp3
When I bounce to CAF I get a correct CAF file
When I bounce to CAF and mp3 I get a correct CAF file and a CORRECT mp3

Something is awry!

Can you explain 'spurious' ?

I´ve looked at this some more and I find it very confusing.

I make MySong.logicx

I bounce to MySong.AIFF and it appears in the Bounces window.
I click on it and it plays.
ok so far

I make an edit in MySong.logicx
I try to bounce it again but I get a “Cant replace audio file “ error!
So I delete MySong.AIFF in the Bounces window by going to Finder and deleting it there.
This leaves a copy of it in the Bin.

I bounce my edited version to MySong.AIFF again and it appears in the Bounces window again.
I click on it and it plays again.
But it plays the ORIGINAL version of MySong NOT the edited one.

To make it work correctly I have to delete MySong.AIFF in the Bin too.

This seems not to happen using .WAV and .CAF files.

I hope you can confirm this procedure.

First off, don't confuse Logic by deleting files in the Finder behind its back, you will not be invited to its wedding if you do that.

Then, the important step is to uncheck 'Add to Project' in the Bounce dialogue.

If this is checked, the file will be added to the Project Audio window, and you can't overwrite it with a new version. Deleting it from the Finder will punish you with an alert that the file is suddenly missing in Logic, and rightfully so.

If this is unchecked, the file will NOT be added to the Project Audio window. You will still get an alert that you are about to overwrite an existing file, but you can choose 'Replace' and get on with life.

I always have 'Add to Project' unchecked for this reason. If I later decide to drag the bounce to a track, it gets added to the Project anyway, so I'm not missing out on anything by having this unchecked.

WAV, AIF and CAF behave the same in this regard.
