Logic Pro 9 Can Logic do a "copy fill selection" ala pro tools?

I've been brushing up on my PT and saw this neat thing where someone copied a segment of room tone from a dialog track and pasted it over to another part of the track. If filled the selected area. I realize Incan just copy things and resize them as necessary but thought I'd naively ask if our Logic can do this. Incidentally, whenever I go into learning mode on my other less used daws it makes me better at Logic as I'll learn things they can do and then (hopefully) find out something new in Logic along the way.

Logic can't do that, but here's one work-around. I do this all the time.

If you haven't done so, set up a separate track for room tone. Loop your tone region or just copy where needed. Don't resize - in fact you need excess on either side of the gap you want to fill, so loop as needed. Change drag mode to no overlap. Go to dialog track that is missing room tone (this is best if it is immediately above or below room tone track. Select all regions on this track (or area you need to work with, if only one). Drag onto room tone track. Drag back to audio track. Perfect cut of room tone to fill gaps. You can then move the room tone region(s) to the audio track if you wish.

Should you wish to work in Soundtrack Pro, it will do essentially the same thing as PT.

Hey Doug,

You and I have talked about this specific technique before, and it is a GREAT tip. It is too bad though that Logic doesn't have a paste to fill selection function like Pro Tools has. I guess it speaks to the fundamental conceptual differences in how the two apps approach editing. This type of function just doesn't seem quite as necessary in Logic's "music making" workflow as it does in Pro Tools' "audio editing" workflow.

Yeah - you and I have talked about this - it does work well for this situation. Very fast, especially with a key command or two.

Agreed that composition vs. audio recording/editing brings out different features. Perhaps that's one feature (of hopefully a few) that will make it from Soundtrack Pro to Logic at some point, as STP is no longer sold.

Would'nt it be nice if Logic would include a user-macro recording feature. By macro, I don't mean those found in the Environment but the type one could find in many other maturely developped program like Words or Excel (far from me to be intentionally sacrilagious here!). A macro being a suite of steps to achieve a specefic result (such as the one described above), triggered by a mouse-clic or key-command. Such macro should of course be custom-made/editable by the user, and be saveable in a menu for future use, transferable (like the Channelstrip Settings are). In fact, when you look at the Undo feature, almost all the ingredients for such user-macro recording feature are already!

I used this yesterday to fill in some radio tuning sfx in between voice over demo bits. I had about a second I needed to fill in 8 gaps. I drug the VO master down onto the radio noise and then back up again. This way I could process each track individually. Worked great and took no time at all.
