Logic Pro Can only hear focused track (but Input monitoring for focused trk is OFF)

I'm working with DMD (Drum Machine Designer)...switch to an Instrument track for a bass line, and DMD drops out. But Input monitoring (for focused trk) is off, so...shouldn't I be hearing something?
