Logic Pro 9 Channel Strip I/P Levels

Hi,
I've been under the impression that when I switch to Record Ready or Input Monitoring in LE9 that after switching the Inserts to by-pass I was monitoring the audio I/P Level in the CS Level Meter. Is this correct as I've been getting some (maybe perceived) level variations in recording an electric guitar with (what I thought were) the same settings on the instrument and my Saffire Audio Interface.

Make sure to enable pre fader metering from the main Options menu under the Audio section.

BTW thanks also for the great tutorial videos on Groove 3, I'm learning a great deal from them.
