Logic Pro 9 Chopping Up An MP3

Hi guys,

I'm new to the whole Logic world and was hoping someone could help me with a problem I'm having.

A mate has asked me to edit a song of his down to just the first verse/chorus and then the tag at the end for inclusion on a video his sister is putting together but I'm having trouble doing it.

I've basically created a new session and dragged the full MP3 of the original song from the Media Browser to a new track.
Once there I've clicked on the "Sample Editor" tab to view the wave form of the song then click and drag to select a section of the song I want to edit out.

When I hit the "delete" key I get the error message "This audio file cannot be changed! The volume or file is locked"

What does that mean? And can I get around it?

Unlock the volume or the file. That is done in finder in the cmd-i console window. In Logic I personally prefer to cut and re-arrange mixed stereo files in the arrange window. Starting out by setting the Logic tempo grid to follow the music in the file helps you to work faster. Use all the tools like scissors, fade, cross fade and whatever you think you need. Oh, and watch out to use the best snap value (upper right corner in arrange) for what you are doing.

Thanks for the reply, though I am not sure I understand what you mean.

I've opened a Finder window and navigated to the MP3 in question. When I click on it I then hit cmd-I which opens an information window with details on file size, file path etc. Under the "General" tab there are a couple of boxes:- "Stationery Pad" and "Locked". I take it this is what you are referring to. Neither of these boxes is checked so I'm not sure whether I am looking in the right place or not

at the bottom of that screen is "Sharing & Permissions". Open that and add your admin account there with read & write permissions.

Or save a copy. It is likely being opened as an mp3 and saved temporarily in a buffer in your main library.

Just save as an aif to a new location and you should be good.

Thanks again for the tips.
The Read and Write access was already selected so that wasn't the problem.
After saving a copy as an aif it worked so it looks like that's done the trick.

Another way of doing this is to make the edits on the region in the arrange window. You can cut/copy/delete/duplicate as much as you like. This is non-destructive and you can even do small cross-fades between sections if required. Once you have assembled the song form you want, just bounce the audio and make a new file.

Just a suggestion....
