Logic Pro 9 chords in score editor

Does anyone know an easy way to put chord symbols (capital letters) above a treble staff in the score editor? I have been dragging the chord tool from the part box to the approximate place I want it in the score, then typing the letter, then clicking on the open field, then click-holding on the just-inserted letter so it is green and moving it to just where I want it. I have to do that for each chord change. It is tedious, and the result is not very clean.

I do not have chords in a midi region. I just play the chords in an audio channel, and most of the Google and Logic searches I have done focus on some midi chord creation feature.

I don't like doing chords from MIDI regions - my bias. It can be a little quirky. I do it the old school way.

What I do is assign the pencil tool to the command key. Then I'll select the chord icon in the text portion of the part box. Once selected, I just click where I want it (with pencil tool on command key) and then type in the appropriate letter (it auto capitalizes) and ensuing chord quality info if needed.

Once you are using the chord cursor, you can use the tab key to go from note to note. Tip: use lead sheet staff style to just do chords on beats, copy/paste to track you want to use.

You can align the chords using the event list (they can be quantized). You can use the cursor. You can also define their placement to the beat by going into Layout>Chords and Grids. Lastly, if you're working in score view, make sure they get assigned to the right track. It's possible to attach them to the bottom of a track when trying to attach them to the top of a track (staff) below.

Hey Doug,

One thing that I do when I am entering chords, which I rarely see mentioned, is to simply Option click above the staff with the Text tool. I can then enter chords and use the tab key to move from note to note. Am I missing something doing it this way? It seems simpler to me, not having to use the Pencil Tool AND the chord icon from the part box.

And I am a big fan of the score window align commands (see attachment)

Old dog learns new tip! If I ever knew that, I had forgotten it. Trying it out seems a little awkward as I don't normally have the text tool selected. But, I like it!

Regarding the alignment features, I use Align Object Positions Vertically all the time (control click on chord brings this up in menu) - the others I can't get to work in the manner I think they should, which is the first (in time) selected object is the location template to which the others snap to. How do you use them?

Old dog here who only knows old tricks here, and none of the new ones 😀

For quick and dirty clean up, I select a chord, any chord; and then use the key command for select similar objects. And then the key command for "align object positions".

Boom, they are all cleaned up. If I want to tweak or offset the position slightly either vertically or horizontally, they are all still selected, and so I can just mouse slide the value in the inspector to effect them all at once.

Ok, one way to do it for sure. Good idea to select all with key command.

I choose to set my first chord where I want it, use it as a template, and then use Align Object Positions Vertically - all chords snap to that. I'll then go in line by line, and select/adjust there (same technique) if needed. Generally selecting the choice in Chords and Grids does a good default horizontal alignment for me.

My beef with Align Objects Horizontally is that it _should_ work (in my mind anyway) like the vertical command, where all selected objects snap to the same absolute position based on selection. This simply doesn't work for me. I played around with it some now and I still don't see how it arrives at the location it moves things to.... I want to use it to put rehearsal cues at the beginning of a line, for example. I can't get it to snap all of them to the location of the first cue. Now to me, that would be useful......

I hear you. I just use the combined Align Object Positions command and tweak as necessary from there. It suits me fine since it's not something I do frequently.....
