Clarification needed for 64 bit mode

I should have my 13" MBA delivered on Monday and will be setting it up for an upcoming recording.

I currently am on a 24" core 2 duo iMac ('07/08) running OS 10.4.9, so I am unfamiliar with the 64 bit mode of the new OSX.

Will my MBA startup in 64 bit by default? Will logic start in 64 bit mode? If so, is this what I want for a 4gb ram machine? I'm not sure I understand the benefits regarding recording in this mode.

What will it improve and what will are the disadvantages at this stage?

Don't bother booting you machine in 64-bit mode, doesn't give you any advantage. And launching the app in 64-bit mode (which has to be enabled via the Finder for the app) only helps if you have >5GB of memory.
