Logic Pro 9 Copy and paste multiple multiple track problem

Antiphones

Logician
I need to copy and paste many tracks from one logic file to another. I have to do this for many songs so I have a big job ahead of me but I'm having a problem.

I go to the source logic file arrange window, select the regions I want and copy. Then I go to the target logic file arrange window, create a new track at the bottom of the track list and paste. When the dialog asks how I want to paste, I choose to "create new tracks".

The result is inconsistent. Often Logic does not create enough tracks and as a result it pastes regions on top of each other. It also does not necessarily keep the tracks in the same order. Basically it makes a mess.

Is this a known bug? Or is there something I can do to stop this happening?

I've noticed annoying things with pasting and creating new tracks, but have not done it enough to know if it's a bug or something I'm doing wrong.

What I do know is that it's best not to have two projects open at once (that could well be a buggy situation I think), I always close one project before opening the target project when doing stuff like this.

What version of Logic? Is it a combination of audio/SI/MIDI regions? If so can you pinpoint whether there is some consistency with problems per type of region. It's timew consuming but when there is inconsistent behaviour you have to try things like that to winkle out a bug.

But if there is a well known actual bug, I'm sure someone will chime in I hope.

Yep, I agree Pete, I've been doing something in one project (project-1) then gone to open another (project-2) and found that Project-1s data has crossed over to project-2s data E.g. software inst's, Patches etc. I never have two open at once anymore.

Thanks for the replies.

I've tried only having one song open at a time but it doesn't seem to help the fact that Logic pastes regions on top of each other. They are all audio regions by the way.

Does anyone know if there is a way of getting Logic to find all overlapping regions and copying them onto new tracks?

Another thing it keeps telling me when I paste is that it can't paste onto protected tracks. However I'm pasting onto a brand new track I just created which is at the bottom of the track list. Anyway I don't use protected tracks (not even sure what they are).

You would think copy and paste would be fairly basic wouldn't you 🙂

Thanks Eli - track import worked perfectly, not overlaps and no missing regions! I didn't even know that feature existed. It looks like you can even import track plugins? Wow, this is one of the main reasons prootools users don't like logic - have they really included this feature now? Fantastic! And thanks for the info!

Thanks for the overlap tip too Pete very useful.

For your information, for track import:
File>Import then find the song with the track you want to import. You'll then get an inspector opening up in the arrange window where you can choose what you want to import.

I clicked only the audio tab in the inspector and then ticked the boxes on the tracks I wanted. It worked perfectly. But it looks like you can choose to import plugins on tracks as well.
