Logic Pro 9 Cracks and pops

I am Using logic 9 on a mac book pro 2.5 core duo with 4 ghz of ram.
I have east west symphonic installed on a G tech 500 gig external
fire wire 800 and apogee duet for play back.

I constantly get pops and crakcs + message saying that the syst. is over load
even with a few sampled loaded.

any help?

how many is a few? using kontakt or play instrument?
have you increased the audio buffer? what happens then?
have you checked the EW forums for optimisation tips?
