Logic Pro 9 deleting unused files

I know this subject has come up before, and I've done web searches, etc. but I haven't found a clear answer. I've transferred a number of reels of analog tape into Logic 9, and when I separate/cut out the individual songs and copy them into new projects/folders, the entire reel gets copied even though when I open the "new" song, the Arrange window only shows the song I "cut/pasted". In other words, the entire 33 minute reel of tape is copied into the new folder, even though it's a five minute song. And only the five minute song appears in the Arrange window. If I open the Audio Bin, the entire file appears, but only the five minute part I'm interested in is highlighted, the rest is greyed out. If I go to Edit-select Unused and try to Delete the unused part, the command is greyed out and and I can't do it.

Obviously if I have a reel of tape that takes up nearly 5 GB and has seven or eight songs on it, and each time I try to split out a song to work on it takes up the additional 5 GB, this becomes a huge waste of disk space. But, I don't know how to delete the unused portion of the file. I've run into this situation before and it seems like it's inconsistent, sometimes I have no trouble deleting the unused parts of the file, and other times (mostly, it seems) it doesn't let me do that.

And before you answer, keep in mind that (as my user name implies) I'm very, very stupid.
