Logic Pro 8 distorted audio

If an audio file levels are to high and its distorting, whats the best way to get rid of the distortion and bring it down? Is there any hope?

If the audio file itself is distorted, no, there is nothing you can do. If the distortion you are hearing is due to the output being to high, just lower the output fader.

I would add that I sometimes find that plugin settings can be too hot, also bus sends.

My rule of thumb is to look at the waveform - if it tops out, then I know I've overcooked the recording and must do it again
