Logic Pro 9 Drum comp question (slicing)

Im a new logic user.. An ex pro tools user and of course there are things i am use to from the pro tools opperation .. Is it possible to group all drum tracks and do slicin to whete it will slice ANother take all together?



I would like to know if its possible instead of doing it track by track?
 
I'm not sure I understand your exact question. But, it is possible to group drums tracks, slice one of them, and have the slicing apply to all the tracks in the group. Is that what you meant?

It's easy then. Just group the tracks via the group field in the mixer on each channel strip that you want included. Open the group settings box and make sure the arrange window editing option is enabled. And you're good to go.

Tip: Once you've assigned the first group. Just option click in the field on additional channel strips to have them added to the group.

That nice trick does work, and is especially useful on the Arrange channel strip. While in the Mixer, however, you can also select multiple channel strips and change their group assignment simultaneously - or change the I/O routing, set up sends, insert plug-ins, switch mute, solo, etc...
- Hold Shift to assign them to an additional group.
- Hold Option while changing the routing to route them (left to right) to ascending input- or output numbers.

Hi Eli - ISTR my good friend jon hiseman complaining bitterly that slicing an entire drum group would lose phase coherence. This would have been more than 5 year ago.

Was he correct for that time, and if so, has that problem been fixed?

FWIW, Phase Coherence when editing drums hasn't been a problem here in L8. I'm currently exploring the new Flex Editing in Logic 9, I note that there are some references such as this:

"Quantizing Phase-Locked Audio Tracks"

I've never had a problem slicing grouped multi tracked drums in L8. Never had a problem with phase coherency.

I did however have one the other day when I recorded with a guitar player( going through an amp) in the same room at the same time as drums. The bleed from the drums into the guitar amp mic caused a bit of phase issues with the drum mics.

But phase issues -aawwhhhh - c,mon - it's stereo!😀

As long as the "phase issues" sound ok then they aren't really phase issues are they?

Let's not forget that the alignment of waveforms is a relatively recent addition to the engineer's armoury and phase introduced to a sound by hardware EQs is why some EQs are more popular than others... but you guys know this already.

I'm having some problems with this. I don't know if I messed up somewhere along the line but anyway. My drums did NOT stay in phase after quantization even though that option was checked on all tracks. I used the same algo on all the tracks. I made a guide track from the kik and snare with only the relevant transients. The snare was all over the place with the OHs. Sometimes it would be in phase and sometimes not.
Is there a way to start from scratch and redetect the files?

The one thing you didn't mention, which is absolutely necessary for phase locked editing to work, is that all the tracks in the group have to be the exact same length. Could this be your problem?

Yes all the tracks were exactly the same length. I'm wondering if it's a bug or if I somehow managed to mess things up when I was manually trying to edit.
It took me a while before I figured out how I wanted to do it.
Is there anyway to get rid of all the flex information in the files and start over, or do I have to make copies and rescan them?

It's easy to get rid of the flex markers. Either change the algorithm to "off" to toggle it temporarily; or control click over the main body of the region and choose "delete all flex markers"; or swipe across them with the eraser tool.

Another question. In some instances the fill gaps/decay thing doesn't fill enough. When I lengthen the decay it doesn't seem to have any visual or audible effect. Can this not be changed after the fact? Does it have to be set before I analyze the files?

Thank you. I know how to get rid of the flex markers, I'm just wondering if all my manual editing has somehow messed things up. I just don't understand why the drums don't stay phase-locked. Some hits are ok, others not. The drums are always grouped and phase-locked, yet they seem to be floating around randomly.

If you've edited the regions after applying flex markers, I could see that possibly screwing things up. Suppose you have a single flex marker that is stretching or compressing to the region boundary; if you then cut the region, it could change the amount of compression/expansion since the length to the region boundary is shorter. Still, if you're cutting them altogether in a phase locked group; it should be okay.

Decay parameter - yes you can alter them after the file has been analyzed. There is no visual feedback. The decay parameter is subtle. Depending on the space between the transient markers and the amount of tempo change, it's possible that it doesn't influence things much.
