Dubstep arrangement technique, query

Here's a question: how much of today's dubstep producers, like Skrillex, Katfyr, or Nero, etc, are using recorded patch changes and midi cc data, as opposed to simply generating masses of fx'd samples up front and mixnmatch/arranging them on the timeline. Perhaps midi-triggering instances of EXS24/Ultrabeat samplers?

Are there schools of thought on midi vs sample approaches to generating these complex-sounding bass sections and stutter arrangements?

(I got into the habit of touch triggering sequences with Opcode's SVP, back in the day)

Hoping for advice on where best to apply my focus in generating this kind of sound and style in Logic, with a workflow that's productive as well as fun. tia, Tom
