Logic Pro 9 EXS24 sample files

It seems that the EXS24 refers to 2 different folders by default for its samples.

-Hard Disk - Library - Application Support - Logic - EXS Factory Samples

-Hard Disk - Library - Application Support - Garage Band - Instrument Library - Sampler - Sampler Files

Can someone tell me what's the difference?
Is it that the samples in the Garage Band folder can be used by both Logic and Garage Band while the one in Logic can only used by Logic?

Thanks for your help

OK!

So the Garage band sample files should then definitely stay there or they wouldn't be accessible by Garage Band anymore, right?

Yes, that's correct. Logic Samples can actually be anywhere, it will (usually) find them.

But note that EXS files consists of two parts (1) the instrument, where all the data about the actual instrument is stored (note ranges, zones, envelopes, filters etc.) and (2) The actual samples themselves.

The instrument is a file with the extension .exs and should be in a folder called Sampler Instruments which is inside in library/ Application Support/Logic (or else an alias called sampler Instruments).

Yes, got it!

So I decided to make an alias of the Garage Band "Sampler Files" pointing to the files on a separate drive.

The difference I understand is that an alias is not necessary in regards to the Logic "EXS Factory Samples" because as you say, it it will (usually) find them wherever they are. The Garage Band "Sampler Files" needs an alias.

Oups! Correction.

It seems that making an alias of the "Sampler Files" folder doesn't work for GarageBand.
Is there a way to copy those sampler files on a separate drive?

Logic does use them and it only makes sense that they would be at their optimal place.

You could copy them, but not much point (except as a backup) if you want to use garageband, then I think they have to be where Garageband thinks they are. No alises.
