Logic Pro External Multi Midi Headache

Hi all,
I'm hoping this isn't a repost, if so apologies and please redirect where appropriate.

I've used DAWs and sequencers for decades, Logic since the emagic days.

I took a DAW vacation for a few years due my Intel Mac no longer supported.

Now armed with a new M2 Ultra machine, I'm setting everything up again.

I'm running Logic 11 (just seen there's 11.1 so I'll do that in the morning).

I'm having issues with multi instruments. I setup a new multi in the environment (cmd-0 for those curious).

• I create a new layer for each multi instrument (midi module).
• I add all the custom Bank messages.
• I painstakingly add all the patch names.
• I've enabled all the channels on the multi.
• I Set the input and output channels.
• In the midi setup on iOS, I've added everything from the AMT8s to every (9) external modules and 2 controllers (Arturia Essential 88 and Studologic SL9).
• I've enabled all the midi channels on each device within midi setup on iOS.

In the multi instrument layer for a module, I test every channel and it's fine.

However, when in the arrange window on midi channel 1 everything works as expected, but the moment I change to another channel (2 to 16), no midi data is received by any of the external instruments.

If I check the AMT8s, they're flashing away on the correct port, but the modules stop responding on anything except midi channel 1.

It's been a few years since I have had to setup logic and I'm hoping I've "missed something" or there's a "new thing added" that I need to enable or disable.

It's driving me totally crazy and I'd appreciate some help please.

Thank you

Sorry to be a little pedantic, but, when you refer to iOS, did you actually mean MacOS? Presumably you are running either Ventura or Sonoma, and Logic Pro 11.0.1? There have actually been some changes vis a vis using multiple external Midi devices, albeit more to do with being able to play logic intruments from more than 1 external Midi device, not sure if that is relevant to your problem. Here is a link explaining this, given that you have two controllers it might be useful to you anyway:

Maybe posting a test project might throw some light on what your issue might be?

kind regards

Mark

Hi Mark,
I'm totally new to the forums so I did realise posting a project file was an option.

I'm currently not at home, but in a few days when I'm back, I'll certainly do that.

With regards to the link, I appreciate it but it's not relevant to my current problem. Getting audio from my devices isn't the problem.

The problem is my external multis receiving data on anything except midi channel 1.i appreciate your help so far though.

Hi Mark,
No no, not pedantic at all. I did mean Mac OS. I'm running Sonoma 10.5.

I put this information in my profile (amongst other things/, maybe that didn't save when I signed up.

With regards to the controllers, I only use one at a time and assign either the Keylab or SL to one instrument using both the inspector in the multi environment, as well as in the arrange window.

As soon as I am back home, I will get a test project and upload it so that you and/or anyone else can maybe get a better insight.

I'm sure it's something silly, but I can't figure it out for the life of me.

Thanks again good Sir

Ok,
I've resolved it and the thread can be closed or deleted (Admin's decision).

I was about to prepare the environment to send and I double checked everything again after a break.

Turns out the guide to the module I was using had some erroneous information regarding the setup in multi mode (on the hardware itself).

My environment multi was all correct, just some misinformation from the user guide.

Glad I checked before sending or it wouldn't have been any help and wasted time.

Thanks again to those that tried helping.
