Logic Pro 9 From GB to EXS24 to Mach Five?

A composer has sent me some songs in GarageBand, and asked me to replace some of the VIs with real instruments, redo the mix, etc.

I have imported a song into Logic 9. It has neatly created a track for each of the GB instruments, separated the effects, etc. From the icons in the track headers it looks like it has created an EVP based track for electric piano, and an EXS24 based track for all the other instruments.

But, when I double click on the input button in the Inspector, I get a generic VI window with no GUI to permit editing of the sounds, and when I use the drop down menus, they all lead to Garage Band instruments.

So it looks like, even though the EXS icon is being used in the track header, I'm not getting real EXS24 instruments, at least not EXS24 instruments I can then edits, save, and import into other compatible VIs like Mach Five.

Is there some way to save these GB instruments as corresponding EXS24 instruments using the original GB samples as a starting point? If I can do that, my next step would be to load these EXS24 instruments into Mach Five, and then start the process of upgrading samples, and replacing sounds at that point.

Or -- are these GB instruments basically inaccessible in that way?

I DID notice that I can create a track using the EXS24 directly, and then have it load in a GB instrument sound. (In fact, it looks like the EXS24 instrument that is created when you specifically load in a GB sound actually uses a EXS24 sound. When you go back to look at it in the library sidebar, it points to the same names instrument in the EXS hierarchy, not the one in the GB listing.)

Can I assume this will always work? (I'd prefer not to do it this way because while the samples appear to be the same, there is a lot of tweaking to do with EQs, compression, etc to get the sounds identical.

I haven't tried this in a while, but as I recall, if you just switch one of these GB based EXS 24instruments to a Logic EXS24 instrument, the samples will automatically load in. It's easy enough to experiment with one and see.

Thanks Eli. That did it. It keeps the GB samples. I'll have to explore whether there is a EXS24 sample that corresponds to each GB sample (or maybe they are the same thing??).

The next steps, for anyone interested:
Open the EXS24 window,
switch the view to Controls,
click the Open button beside "Edit:",
click the Instrument drop down menu,
select "Export sampler instrument and sampler files",
go to the location where these are saved, and
copy (don't move) the .exs file into the folder with the samples.

The .exs file will now load into Mach Five (or presumably any other EXS24 compatible sample player) and bring the samples in with it.

Glad it worked. FTR, you don't need to go to Controls view in the workflow you describe above. There is an Edit button directly in the main EXS 24 GUI when in the regular "Editor" view. This Edit button opens the EXS instrument editor where you can access the same Instrument menu with the export options.
