Logic Pro 9 Getting Logic to Release Audio

I sometimes use an external wav/aiff editor while in Logic 9 by hitting shift/W, which takes the selected audio to Bias Peak Express. But I've discovered that after making changes in the external editor, when I try to save, the editor says that the audio is being used by another program and cannot be saved.

Is there a way to get Logic to release the audio without closing it down?

Sometimes I AM able to save, but when I go back to Logic, the wav/aiff file hasn't been updated. So I have to tell Logic to refresh overviews. Unfortunately, the refresh is not always successful.

Anyone have any ideas how to work with external editors? It seems hit and miss at best.

To my experience, Logic itself doesn't lock the audio-files. I sometimes use Melodyne Editor (Stand Alone version) as an external sample-editor because then I don't have to transfer audio (in real time) into the Editor plug-in. I open the audio-file instead from Logic's audio-files folder and it's directly in Melodyne Editor. When I am to "bounce back" my edited audio, I save it in Editor as an aif-file, at the same location - with the same name. Editor asks me if I want to replace the existing file and I say yes.
The edited audio is now in my Logic audio-bin. I use "update file information" and the audio on the track gets updated. Perhaps Bias Peak locks it then? (Which would be stupid for a sample editor to do.)

By the way, how did you change the external sample editor of choice from Soundtrack pro (with shift-w) to Bias Peak? Where do I do that?

Processing Logic audio in STP works as expected. The processed file is saved in STP, then is updated when returning to Logic.

So maybe this is a Bias issue.

Live effects in STP will have to be rendered in the Process menu before saving.

If using effects from the Process menu, then just save.

The external editor can be assigned at the bottom of the Sample Editor tab in Logic>Preferences>Audio

I'm not surprised that it works in STP, since STP is part of the family. I think you're right that it's a Peak problem, but I also found the same problem with other editors I tried before settling on Peak-which is why I wondered if it was Logic itself.

Okay, I figured out the problem. If you have a clip open in the Logic sample editor you can't make changes to it via an external editor. If you double click the clip and close the sample editor, the external editor can be used to make changes and Logic will update those changes when you close the external editor.

Ah! Double-dipping wave editors.

It's one or the other here.

Not so strange as things go among different user set ups, but I can have Logic's Wave editor open, and process the file in STP, and have it updated in both the Arrange window and the Wave editor.

Maybe just choosing to use one editor at a time (internal or the external editor) might yield more predictable results.

I use Izotope RX editor all the time, I've never seen this happen... Not sure if I've been keeping the logic editor open or not...

RX works as a plug-in, doesn't it?

Yes, and occasionally I use it that way, but for most operations I prefer the "destructive" or hard edit. I feel like i have more control over exactly what I want it to sound like and then commit to that process. Maybe I am familiar enough with the tools to just know what I want.

I wish I'd been in on that deal. I checked out the current price and the full pro version is over a grand.

I'm sorry, that's just waaaaay too much to pay. Even the $350 version is too high in my opinion.

Think about it. Logic is extremely sophisticated, yet it only costs about four hundred or so dollars. I love izotope's stuff (I've been using Ozone since version 1), but the prices for RX are unreasonable.
