First of all, to make a full disclosure, I work for this publishing company.

That said, we are just publishing a book (just went to the printer today!) that sounds like it's just what you want. It's called Becoming A Synthesizer Wizard and the author has written a number of books on synthesis and really knows his stuff!

Hope that helps,
Orren

I have no affiliation with these guys, however I've found their tutorials very helpful at times, and worth the cost. Good customer service, too. LFO is just a low frequency oscillator which applies a waveform to whatever signal is patched to it at a rate that is slow enough to be very audible as an effect. E.g. if you turn the volume knob up and down on an instrument, you are in effect "oscillating" the amplitude of the whole signal at a low, very noticeable frequency.
If you can pick up an old Prophet 5 or even something that older that used actual patch cables, it can help to demistify the whole process by making it less abstract.
