Logic Pro 8 How do you make a solid Muted Bass in ES1 or 2?

I'm curious if anyone could help me out with understanding how to make a Muted Sub Bass instrument...I realize this may be a complicated question but I coul use some direction on what is needed for a pure, muted sub bass. If this isn't the correct name for it, it is the kind of bass that is used in Yoga Dub music (Psychill, Downbeat, etc). I keep trying to make it organically and am so close! I seem to run into the same issue every time--the richest notes have such a short range. I'm only able to get good, low sounds from A to D on the 0 octave. Can't even jump from root to 5th without it sounding way out of control. I appreciate any help, and I apologize in advance if this is an unacceptable thread. A little new to the forum battlegrounds...
