Logic Pro 9 How stable is L9 for you?

I got L9 immediately but haven't been using it everyday. But, it seems that when I do use it there are some new crashes and corruptions that I'm not used to. I've gotten the random "static of death" when recording audio at a buffer of 64 where it just bursts into a very loud static and can fry the client's ears. Not cool. Also got some weird crashes today where for some reason the audio was truncated to 8 bit and logic wouldn't play it (?). That was a new one. I had to get out of software monitoring mode and use my Maestro software to finish the system so I could raise the buffer. I had BFD2 running which I know is a resource hog but in L8 I never had these odd crashes. I realize this is a first release and that things will(hopefully)improve with an update or 2. I didn't get serious with logic until 8.02 was already out so I'm sure I missed some of the bugs that others had to endure.

Anyone remember how long it took Apple to release the first 2 updates to L8? Was it within the first 6 months or so for the first update? Just curious. Overall I love it and don't see a big reason to downgrade.

Generally, issues that relate to audio buffer sizes tend to be either the fault of the audio driver, or at least the driver is partially to blame. Since you mention the Maestro, that would mean the Apogee drivers are involved. Are you sure you have the latest drivers? In the past, Apogee were known to have issues with their drivers, especially with the Ensemble drivers. The newest ones are supposed to be a major improvement, but that doesn't mean they're rock solid.

FWIW, I use my Metric Halo ULN8 at 64 samples in Logic 9 and I've never gotten a random blast of static, ever.

I believe the first update came very fast, far less then 6 months, I'm guessing more like 2-3. I don't remember how long it took for the second one.

Thanks Orren. I am using the symphony system but have things hooked up so I can use the motu drivers (which never had this issue) but still use my apogee hardware. Thanks apogee!! Another reason to rethink the whole symphony thing. I got it so things would runner smoother in Logic.....We'll see.

Hi,
Running 2 Mc Pros, 2 Symphony 64 cards W Rosetta 800. No problems with audio bursts here, not even one.

I am running the most current versions of everything: Logic Pro 9, the Maestro software and hardware updated for the S64.

I'm not sure this is software related anymore so will report back after trying some other tests. I've made some other changes to my system lately that may or may not be affecting things. Hope I didn't scare anyone away from L9!

I've been working with Logic 9 for a couple of weeks now and it's been very stable for me. It's on a MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz with 2 GB of ram, Leopard 10.5.8, Zebra 2, NI B4II, VSamp, Augustus Loop, etc, and a bunch of freebees as well. I came from Digital Performer 5.13, so I'm appreciating Logic's stability compared with DP. That said, I hope Apple goes on a more aggressive schedule with updates/bug fixes . . . six months seems like a long time to wait for a maintenance build.

Not to bore people with my new gear history, long story short is that I added an Apogee ad16x to my chain. This was when I first had the noise burst issue recording at 64. Prior to that I had been using the Rosetta 800 without issue. I'm selling the 800 anyway at this point so I'm wondering if there's something funky with the ad16x. I feel like it'll take some time to narrow down as with clocking there are many things that can have an affect. Once again, my apologies for putting a negative spin on L9 as we all know there are enough threads from people who are really upset about it (not me).

I just wanted to report back. I made some changes in my studio and have been recording a new song consisting of bfd2, rmx, a few tracks of waves gtr 3 and 8 or so audio tracks. I'm at a buffer of 64 using the Apogee symphony setup. So far so good. No white noise stactic surprises or weird crashes.

There are some other bugs. One is that it doesn't seem that merge midi to selected region is working. Also, after recording a take use take folders with audio sometimes the last take recorded doesn't play back as it's not selected. I'm going to try deleting some preferences to see if that fixes any of these odd behaviors.

That is good news. Perhaps you would care to post some details of what you did to solve the problems you were having? If someone else experiences the same, they might very well benefit from your findings 🙂

I ended up making my system drive larger by deleting a partition on it and making it all one drive. I was running out of room on that drive. I also swapped out a word clock cable on the apogee ad16x, which is the master device. I was at 64 all day yesterday, even through mixing this song. I really wanted to push it to see if I could make it crash or cause the white noise.
