Edgar,
I told you if I ever figured out this works I would let you know.
Finally!!! - I figured out what the finger option in the drop down menu of the notepad field of a staff style does and how it works.
Basically - it provides the ability to display fingering associated with a note ( as in… which one of your 5 fingers should you use). The assignment is done via the “Set Main Finger #” key commands ( where # is the finger number 1-5) - there are 6 different key commands - one for each finger and one to clear the finger association.
The assignments can be made regardless of whether the finger display options is enabled or not in the staff style. However to make the numbers visible, the option must be enabled.
Another mystery solved!
