Logic Pro How to work with MIDI automation properly?

Hi again, for reasons that I use Vienna Ensemble Pro I prefer to use MIDI automation while recording.
Please are there any totorials how to use MIDI automation (expression, volume etc.) properly? I find it very tricky and sometimes getting strange results. Host automation was always working as it should. But MIDI?
Let's say you record a region and then you want to add expression controller, and then some vibrato. Are you doing it on the same track pressing record and then you have 3 regions one on another? How to do it properly?

thanks

Hello,

In Logic>Preferences, what are you overlapping recordings set to for Cycle off, Cycle on?
The screen shot shows LPX 10.3, I've forgotten the specific wording in previous versions.

Assuming you're recording a region with cycle off, Overlap/Merge Selected Regions will embed all note and controller data into one region from each recording pass. Record some notes, stop recording. With the region still selected, go back to start position, record controller data, stop recording. You'll have one region with notes and MIDI CC data.
