Logic Pro 8 Import Atari Logic 2.01 files to Apple Logic 8

Well, after what seems like a life-time delay, I have finally bought a mac and Logic 8 Studio. I worked extensively with Atari Notator 3.12 and then Logic 2.01 (the last MIDI only version ever released on Atari ST) back in the late 80s and early 90s.

I want to now import those old Logic 2 song files into Logic 8. Any one ever tried this? The manual says Logic 8 will only import from Logic 5 upwards. I've not tried it yet.

I still have my Atari Stacy 2 Laptop, but the power supply has died so would need to do some work before being able to fire up the Atari Logic software again.

Many thanks in advance for any help,

timbald.

It is indeed only possible to import Logic songs created in versions 5, 6 or 7 into logic 8. How many songs do you wish to import into Logic 8?

kind regards

Mark, thanks for the extremely quick reply!

Well I have a total of 264 Logic songs from the Atari, but realistically probably only want to seriously consider importing maybe a quarter of those.

I understand that Logic 5 would import Logic 2, and Logic 8 will import logic 5. Is that my only answer?

My only other thought was to get the Atari going again and play the songs over MIDI into Logic 8 (got a 4x4 midi interface).

Any suggestions would be great. I can see a hunt for an Atari Laptop power unit going to be needed here....

If you like, you can send me, let's say, 10 of those and I will open them in Logic 7 and save them with that for you, after which, you should be able to open these in Logic 8. Perhaps a few other LUGgers might be willing to jump in and help as well. Feel free to contact me per PM.

Not quite - Logic 7 will import songs from Logic versions prior to 5. If you know someone with Logic 7, it might make sense to hire him for an afternoon.

Or export them as Midi files, which you should be able to import into logic 8.

To timbald,

Something very important when importing Atari songs into Logic:
Only the patterns which appear in the Notator Arrange list will be imported.

I used to keep SysEx info on Ptn 99 and often used a single pattern for a song, not in the Arrange list. When importing in such cases, the resulting Logic song will be blank (or this was the case last time I tried, many years ago).

Just a warning....

Thanks to you both for the replies and thank you Mark for the very kind offer of converting 10. I may take you up on that as it would also serve as a good test to see how well they will import into Logic 8 before i waste lots of effort converting a load of the others.

WHY WHY WHY have Apple removed this functionality?? That seems really backwards, seeing as only the previous version could still import it.

Perhaps you could drop me an email on one of my webmail addresses qpalzm10 {at} fsmail /DOT/ net and I will pick few file files to send you as tests.

Thanks once again I am very grateful to you.

Tim.

Doubt any of this will help your particular situation, but I thought I'd pass along this info as it's on the general topic of converting from older versions.

I just did a project of converting hundreds of files from the PC 4.x (and earlier?) format to something usable in Logic 8. I discovered that .lso files opened fine in Logic 7.x, none of my versions of Logic (back to 6.x is still installed) would open .PAT files, but interestingly (to me, anyway..), Logic 8 would directly open .SON files. I don't even remember what version(s) saved as a .SON - I go back to Notator 2.0 and things are a bit blurred together.

gocon: Trying to open Notator .son files with Logic 9. Lyrics are in the original files but are not transferred. Any suggestions?
